and how will it actually delete my posts on the forums, or just change my post count? and presumably it won't cost a penny?

I'm happy to give up all my posts, if it doesn't actually delete my posts, but if it does then, I'll donate my first 500 posts, if it means I still have MM access and my avatar.

it will just be the number of posts that is removed. actual post content will stay (until it gets pruned naturally).

you could have 1 post and still access MM if you previously met the post count :]

They don't get 'sold' individually. They get pooled and redistributed in up to three lumps, for top, 2nd and 3rd highest bidder
