Anybody know of any good (free if poss) remote access software i have tried pcanywhere but cant get connected have spent an age trying to configure it but no joy (will connect to a friends comp as a test) but not the comp i want it to connect to, i know it may be a prob with other comp so before i have to trek to the others comps location thought i might try an alternative first. Thanks

Ultravnc looks a good one just confused with the different downloads

Ultr@VNC 1.0.2 Setup

Ultr@VNC 1.0.2 Video Driver Setup (Silent)
(This driver is only for Windows 2000, XP, 2003)

Ultr@VNC 1.0.2 Binaries archive

Ultr@VNC 1.0.2 Video Driver Setup

Ultr@VNC 1.0.2 Source code archive

are all these needed or just the setup file.

Have had alook at logmein there are two versions free n paid (pro) was looking at the free version till i saw there was no file transfer or remote printing included, have to go for the pro edition for this feature which one do you use

I use free as I don't want to pay for it. I don't need to print remotely or transfer files accross, i just need remote access.

We use Logmein Free to support over 300 PC's and it works an absolute treat.

Never need remote file transfer or printing so it isnt an issue.

If your going to be supporting lots of random people, then check out LogMeIn Rescue, as this one doesnt need you to install anything on the remote machine, you simply send them a link to click on, they click it and agree to the remote session and BINGO!

what operating system are you using?

if it's xp pro or vista business/ultimate, then definatly use remote desktop (and hamachi)

can someone explain why they think ultravnc is better than tightvnc?

I always thought tightvnc had the quality advantage because you the compression was better?

fini

best vnc combination i've found is.. tightvnc server, with the realvnc viewer (the viewer can be run as a standalone exe, so you can keep it online somewhere then download it when you need to use it :) )

Yes but have you thought about security? Basically you're opening a standard VNC port on your machine, and allowing traffic in? Also is the VNC password encrypted or plain-text?

If you want to make it "fully" secure, i think it's better to use VNC over VPN or SSH tunnels.
