Remote access software

^^^That is rather funny lol good old microsoft do it again! I have never used rdp just wanted to give it ago, have no intention of using it on my network

RDP is fine for LAN access but opening it up to the entire Internet is just insane.

I'm currently running windows 7 pro on my new media machine and i really want to use rdp to remote access it on my lan from my windows home premium machine but i know this cant be done straight out the box.

Just wondered if it were possible to somehow copy over the RDP files from my new Windows 7 Pro machine to my Home Premium machine and then use RDP which files would i need to copy?

Would this work?

You can do it out of the box.
 
Oh yea of course you can! sorry i got myself mixed up lol i meant my media machine is running Home Premium and so is my desktop its my laptop thats running Pro. I would like to be able to remote access my media machine running premium from my desktop also running premium which i know cant be down out the box so to speak
 
Just a thought - I did this when I was out in the USA and needed to access my home PC.
You might want to use wake on lan, you can use this to remotely turn on your PC. You can then turn it off using your laptop controlling it as usual. That way you save a little bit of power and only turn it on when you need it.

You'll need to configure it before you go though.
 
+1 to TeamViewer. It can also be used as a portable application making it even more handy.

Would have also suggest Splashtop but last time I checked there's no remote client for Windows anymore, just the streamer.
 
Another vote for TeamViewer here.

Make sure it works before you go though, a few antivirus' and firewalls have blocked it in the past for me.
 
Think i will go for teamviewer then as it always seems highly regarded. I just thought there might be a way to somehow copy the server part of RDP from a Pro version of Windows to a Home Premium version and be able to fully utilize it but hey never mind :D

You probably can, but using RDP would involve opening ports and would also mean if the broadband you're using doesn't allow people to connect to that particular port then it won't work.

TeamViewer works through port 80 (correct me if I'm wrong), so if you can browse the web using the broadband you're on then you can connect to your machine via TeamViewer.

Give a try to Remote Utilities Free. Unlike TeamViewer it won't limit your connection hours and bombard you with 'buy me' messages.
