Remote start

I never knew this. I left mine running this morning to defrost at 6am. So technically i was breaking the law?

thats the very reason i had mine installed. i never leave it running if im not in the vacinity anyway. when it is activated the doors remain locked and the sensors are still armed... the only difference being is that the engine is on and idling.

The car IS a manual and to prevent accidently pressing the button you have to press and hold it for 3 seconds before its actually switches on

Splitz - im with NU and it didnt affect my insurance premium either. I had mine (toad ai606 with a few minor additions!) fitted by a mobile fitter who i can recommend. he's patient and willing to talk things through with you if youre unsure. drop me an email and i'll give you his number if you want :)

It's not a case of remote starters are bad, it was just improperly installed on your car.

What happened to you should NEVER happen if it was installed correctly.

Very true, as it wasn't me who installed it or had it installed I didnt know that it was done improperly untill it was too late. Having read the installation manual however, it looks like it is not possible to stop the remote start on a manual car if it left in gear, only an auto.

depends on the make of alarm. with the clifford you have to set it by doing a manual operation within the car beforehand before the remote start will work which can get a bit tedious. with the toad, you dont - all you just have to remember is that if you did leave it in gear..dont press that button!

I find it simply easier (as i do in the morning) to start the car with one key, then lock it up with the other, and go off and enjoy a nice cuppa while its warming up :p

Remote starts are bad. I have one fitted to my Civic (it was on when I got it)

I used to think it was awesome, get up to a nice warm car on a winter morning. This all changed when my car decided to kamikaze into my neighbours Transit van when i accidentally pressed the remote start button when carrying the keys and other items to a friends car. The worst thing is I got to see it all happen in slow motion while panicking trying to stop the inevitable. :o

Then it wasnt installed correctly or you choose to have it fitted that way as many people do. Clifford intellistart has you follow a procedure where to arm the system you have to press a button on the keyfob BEFORE you switch off the engine and before you lock the car. It then runs until you get out and then turns the engine off for you.

This guarantees you are not in gear when you remote start it. Also the revs and the brake pedal is monitored, if either is engaged it cuts the ignition.

It's perfectly safe when used as it was intended.

You can also press the button again and cut the ignition.
The advantage of this is if someone broke in they cannot drive away with your car like they can with the two key manual method. As soon as they press the throttle or the brake without the key in the ignition the engine cuts

A few years ago, I got out my car whilst it was running and a policeman was walking down the path next to the road. He gave me a right earful about leaving a running car etc.

I had actually got out to advise him that a car parked outside my house was leaking petrol on my doorstep. He sorted it out but still warned me I should have turned it off before approaching him.

Mine only works if I use the turbo timer to turn the car off beforehand. No danger of remote starting it when it's in gear that way.

I don't really use it much and does feel like a liability having a button in my pocket that can start my car. Remote headlights is cool tho :)

You can set them to be in auto mode where they will start regardless, without any 'priming' needed.

This is what I have set on mine and the handbrake is good enough to stop the car moving when its started in gear. I never leave it in gear but my dad has a habit of leaving it in gear when he moves the car on the drive though!

I installed the AI606 in my Fiesta. I've never heard of this remote start addon though, I might search for that! I try to install these alarms myself so I won't be needing that installer, but thanks anyway :)

When I install the remote start it'll be wired up to the heated windscreen (front and back) and the heater control module so the car will be toasty warm and ice free.

The only thing that I don't like about the Clifford alarm is that you only have to press the remote start button for one second to start the car. A much better idea IMO would be that you would have to hold the button for 3 seconds as features on other alarms.

That's my point. It sounds too easy to accidentally press that button and start your car. It's especially worrying considering the RF range of clifford keyfobs
