In one of the many GD threads in which almost every poster misses the point of the topic, someone (Dampcat I think) suggested removing the post count from the forums to remove the nonsense reples, e.g. +1, forthewin, etc. I think this is a really good idea.

If post count was removed would it affect your posting activity? Do you actually care what your post count is? Some of you - many of you? - must do but why? What makes you hot for a high post count?

A poll would be nice, mods. Or a ban for being presumptious. You know, whatever works for you :o

I really don't think anyone posts for the post count, I would bet spam posts as you mentioned are still prevalent on forums with the count removed.

Once upon a time it wasn't active for certain forums, including (IIRC) GD. I think it's only the testing forum where that is true now?

I say get the mods to write a script to total every users +1 posts. Then display it in a thread so we can all see who the biggest +1 offenders are :p

I can't see any other reason why someone would just post +1 other than to increase their post count. If it is a genuine reply - it's lazy and pointless to a thread - and when I see it, it actually makes me wonder why they bothered.

( That bit wasn't serious by the way - but the op has a point.... )

Not really, though it's of interest as I try not to be too spammy so it's an interesting measure of my contribution to the forums over the years.

This hasn't come up for a while, though the 'old-timers' of the forums will know this isn't the first time this subject has been raised :p

I always read it as a shorthand version of "I wholeheartedly agree with what you say and rather than repeat it in my own inimitable style I will instead endorse your previous reply with my approval by way of a shorthand '+1' :p

Perfect time for me to get some post notches with an irrelevant and pointless non contributing post. +1
=D
Really though, im a newbie to the forum still and i avoid the +1 style comments, not entirely though im sure in my lazy times or quick check of OC while the boss has his back turned i would have replied with a pointless short post.
Besides id rather see '+1' written as a short post than a load of 'lol lol lol lol' stuck everywhere!

If postcounts were removed then I don't think it would bother me all that much since my postcount presently isn't representative of the number of posts I've made.

However it could prove rather problematic for the MM, even assuming it could simply be hidden but still available to the moderators so they'd know when the 250 posts were reached there is then the problem of letting the user know that they've reached said target - you could possibly set up a script for an auto-notification at that point but that would mean 'hacking' the forums and that's not likely as those are kept to a minimum. Also given the amount of queries on the MM already when it's quite clearly laid out in the FAQ this idea would surely boost that exponentially.

It can also be quite handy to identify spammers but maybe the situation is slightly chicken and egg anyway so there'd be fewer spammers and therefore less need to identify them.

wouldn't make a difference, i'm not a prolific poster anyway, i'm surprised i have as many as i have now tbh.

I've been on here nearly 5 years and I still havent hit 1000 posts.
I only ever post when I've got something to say on a topic and I think there are quite a few others on here who are equally not bothered about racking up a post count.

I wonder how many active members have an average post count under 1 post per day?
