Removing thermal paste

Isopropyl alcohol if you've got some to hand.

Otherwise either the Akasa Tim Clean or Arctic Silver ActiClean work well. I'm currently using the ActiClean and it's excellent.

Don't use nail polish remover, as there are other undesirable substances in it. Don't use alcohol from Tesco, as it will have a high water content.

You could just wipe it off with a paper towel, but that will leave residue. Pure alcohol and a lint free cloth. A coffee filter actually works very well.

Don't try and remove the CPU cooler while the PC has been off overnight!

Learn't the hard way with that, pulled it off thinking "yeh it will just ease off" ruined the socket and needed a new MB.

I usually let the PC run for 5 mins then try it :)

I did mine this morning with Smirnoff and Bounty. They were in the same location as my missus. God knows what goes on in that room the food comes from

Hey guys. Just in the process of taking my CPU cooler off. I have heated the CPU up by running the PC for 5 min but it's really hard to remove. It's almost lick it is glued on. I dont want to pull too hard incase i break the mobo

I have all ways used an old bottle of jack daniels.

I used to drink many many years ago probably 8 years ago and stoped had the bottle lieing around and been using it only for cleaning paste of CPU`s ,GPU`s etc :)

I use TimClean (as pointed out above) and industrial cotton buds.

The TimClean dissolves the paste quickly even dried on stuff and the cotton buds allow you to see what you are doing especially with CPU's/GPU's with surface mounts. The bottle I've got has lasted years as you only need a drop on each bud and two or three buds to get it spotless.
