Reno air show crash

None of the planes were flying directly over the crowd, they were in a circuit which was in front of them. The loss of control was the reason this one crashed into the crowd. There are a few videos up now of the crash. There is also an image of the plane before the crash showing a small section missing out of the rear elevator on the horizontal stabiliser which is a possible cause for the loss of control: Photo

Death toll up to 10 now, hopefully no more.

Well that missing piece even though small would have a fairly drastic impact on the handling of the plane.

Any time the rear elevator was used the plane would have a tendency to want to roll over as the forces would be uneven.

You're correct - the 'Stang has a great dependency on the tail control surfaces... especially in the unlimiteds, the threshold for things going wrong is significantly smaller than in the original warbirds. Hell the engines alone have almost twice the power of the original spec.
