Renting in Birmingham, areas to avoid?

I rent out Four Oaks and it aint cheap at all.
 
Harborne would be my choice - it's upmarket, only 3 miles from the centre of the city yet rent isn't bonkers like Solihull.
 
Vast majority of Birmingham is an utter wasteland.

I live in Bearwood inSmethwick which is the 'nice' part. Cheeky sod who said to avoid it. Mind you i'm so used to it i think it's great but yeah there is **** all in Smethwick but Bearwood is about 3 miles from City Centre on Hagley Rd, which is THE main route into Birmingham. You can get a bus every 3 mins on average from my road into town but we don't have train or metro, only thing misisng in Bearwood.

I'd really only recommend Harborne or Bearwood, both are commuter/student friendly places.

I don't know about Sutton as such as I am just down the road and don't wander down that way too much but aint it a bit pricey and not that much less than Four Oaks etc but with more flats unless you are in those ones right by the park ... it is good for MILFs though :D Sutton, Four Oaks, Shirley, Solihull are more for families imo and are expensive because of the good schools so you are paying rent for something I presume you won't be accessing.

Somewhere like Lichfield is worth a look quite a bit cheaper, lots locally to do at night, etc.
 
i live in worcestershire. plenty of people i know commute to birmingham via kidderminster train station, though i wouldn't advise you live in kidderminster. bewdley, stourport, worcester, even droitwich are places i'd look at. all easy to be at broad street in less than an hour via the train. i wouldn't want to live in birmingham but that's just me. stourbridge isn't bad if you want to be closer.
 
I grew up in the black country near Birmingham.

For a place to live I'd suggest the town centre, plenty of well priced 2 bedroom apartments for around the price you are looking at (nice ones).

If not that, then Solihull or Harborne - almost every single other area is a crime infested dive - Birmingham town centre can be a little rough at times, but it's got plenty to do.
 
Some of the places mentioned here are going to be pretty steep on rent price (Solihull, Shirley, Selly Oak, Sutton, Four Oaks etc)

I'm going to suggest the "other" side of birmingham, places such as Blackheath, Rowley Regis, Cradley Heath and Halesowen. More expensive areas are places like Amblecote, Stourbridge, Wordsley, Kingswinford
 
Cheers for the help guys, I'll probably end up around Edgbaston.

Preferable a house share since I don't know any one in Birmingham and it should help make a few new friends.

Prices look around £400 inc bills which isn't too bad.

edgbaston is nice but are you aware it's central?
