Renting with animals - why is it almost impossible?

Yes, I have read it. Of course it doesn't. It does however say that landlords cannot refuse animals because they don't like them or because they worried about damage. They can refuse them, under reasonable circumstances- such has having a two large dog in a flat. Probably not a good idea. And the landlord would be in their right to refuse it.

However, a landlord refusing you having 1 small dog in a 5 bedroom detached house, is just being silly. Yet, that is the case currently where even if the house is big - with plenty of space - landlords are say no to ANY pets.

I wouldn't want dog owners near to me if I was in a flat, generally the rat sized dogs are the most annoying yappers.

It also gives landlords the right to require insurance - IMHO, reasonable circumstances would probably cover not wanting 5 pets in a house designed for 3/4 people.

Yes, it does and that's 100% reasonable. I am not saying landlords are being unreasonable not allowing 4 oe 5 pets. I am saying in 95% of the places we have looked at - it's always "NO PETS" Singular. Why? Even if we had 1 small dog - we would have been exactly where we are right now.

Because it's not your property at the end of day. It's someone else's property and it's perfectly valid for them to assign whatever conditions they want over it in most cases. The answer is for you to buy your own property and then you can fill it how ever many animals you like - although I suspect the RSPCA would get involved at some point.

Because landlords not only don't want to deal with the damage and smells but the complaints when their tenants pets cause disruption to the neighbours. Dogs barking constantly, cats crapping on other people's properties etc.

Understandable.

As I have mentioned, we are told. "No pets" 95% of the times, without even mentioning how many pets we have. And again, I feel this is a significant enough issue that the government had to step in and create a law for it - to force landlords to accept pets in most cases.

Why does the government need to come in gold people's hands?

Surely this is a case of not getting pets until you can provide for them?

The government disagrees.

Well clearly they do since the renters bill weighs heavily on the side of landlords. The ombudsman isn't going to side with renters taking the biscuit - which is what you're wanting to do. The requirement for renters to cover the insurance for potential damage aims to keep landlords in the position they started in as the owners of the property.

No, if you've been following along - you'll see I am asking wy it's "NO PETS" not "Only X pets". If we had 1 small dog, the situation would be the same. I am not, for one moment disagreeing with landlords who don't want to take on 4 or 5 pets - completely understand. I am talking about not allowing any pets, whatsoever.

Because life is easier to say blanket no to all pets rather than allowing renters leeway that would get taken advantage of. Allow 1 dog and someone tries to have 2 cats, or 4 gerbils, or 10 fish, etc etc.

Sounds like you probably still have a lot of pets, probably quite an important bit of information to include as to why you've been rejected so far. Why would a landlord want to take on someone with so many dogs and cats compared to someone with no pets?

Interesting that the amount and type of pets has vanished from the OP. Four dogs and two cats in a rental is ridiculous. I absolutely detest crap landlords but even I'd say that's far too much. Doesn't matter how clean you keep the place, it'll stink of pets when you move out.

It's not "interesting" - that is from a previous post of mine on theses forums. Go look at my post history to find it.
