Replace the last of the OCUK Mondeos!

Had a browse today is the Insignia as bad as memory says as they seem to be pretty good value second hand?
I would avoid personally,

Been reading car mechanic magazine since 18 and I am pushing 40. Their project cars, they have almost never had to replace an engine, except in one of those and it was a total nightmare.
I also have a pal in the army whose brother owns one and has put silly money into keeping it on the road.

Still, any make/ model can have a lemon I guess. But I would look further into it before considering it.

I had a look on autotrader for you last night, struggling for suggestions as its a size car I do not usually look for.

It is diesel you are after?

Shame an accord would be slightly too old, really rate the Honda engines, I suspect a civic tourer would be too small inside (boots huge)
How does a Passat stand for value vs an Octavia that I have seen mentioned?

Mazda 6 ?

Isn't it always recommended to stay away from a Mazda Diesel? I don't know if it's still the case and the newer engines are perhaps fine.

I’m not too fussed fuel wise I don’t do moon millage so diesel isn’t essential but when you look at cars in this class the majority seem to be diesels.

As others have said, why not try out the newest shape Mondeo? Handsome cars, haven’t heard many complaints, a couple of neighbours have had theirs for years.

@a1ex2001 bumping the thread. Did you manage to replace the Mondeo yet? I ask as my Mondeo's MOT is nearing in August and wanted to check if you got a newer Mondeo? :D
No it still lives, got through the MOT and service with a new set of drop links and an exhaust mount. I will keep it until it either dies or throws up a bill I can’t justify (if the dmf or injectors go it will be sent to we buy any car!)

When looking at replacements I narrowed it down to the latest Mondeo, Superb or Insignia. I was less keen on the superb as for me it doesn’t represent great value I like to buy a car and drive it till it dies and the Superb keeps it’s value to well. The Insignia was very tempting as it represents great value for money and is actually a decent enough car for the bland family wagon market.

Really I just hate buying cars I’d love to be rich enough for it to be fun instead of a painful way of burning a pile of cash.

Same here. Mine has corrosion on both subframes (has been for a couple of years now) and the main one is offside shock having list misting of oil. It's not the parts replacement costs, its what am I going to uncover when doing both shocks. :D

Have already gone through new clutch, DMF and Timing belt with aux belt in past 3 years. Keeping it until economically not viable. I still have the clutch release bearing noise since the DMF and clutch was replaced. I have done 28k miles since and no issues other than that annoying grinding sound under load.

Simple maths tells me I have to shell out twice or more than the amount of what I paid for my mk4 7 years ago, to get a similar age/mileage mk5. :p

I got my 04 plate in 2008 for about 6k, it had 39k on the clock and was immaculate. Today 6k is boarder line banger money it’s scary how prices have moved! The time will come when it has to go but until then I’ll keep it most weeks it hardly moves these days as we use the wife’s car but it can’t be beaten for a tip run or a week away!

I paid 2800 for mine in 2018 including part exchange (was 3.5k full price). Its a 2010, 59 plate and had 74k miles then. Currently nearing 132k. I have learned to appreciate it over the years. As much as I don't like the prospect of buying the 'same' car again I cannot find anything equivalent in today's market lol.

We are thinking of keeping only the missus' Mazda 3 if Mondeo goes for a toss. I have my motorcycle for commute to work if needed.
