Bump. Sorry guys. I really need to know whether a GTX 260 can run on a 500W PSU? Am I cutting it far too close?

Macky,
I have seen on forums etc guys running 520w psu's with a 260 in

Not much difference 20w but if you need 20w and don't have it then you in doo doo

But i "think" you'd be ok, but best wait for a power guru to come along ;)

Looking at most of the Benchmarks the 260 seems on par with the 4890 and in some cases, better. I'd prefer the 260 as it will have better drivers, run quieter, and I'm guessing, have less problems.

I was looking at that. Playing on a 22" sreen, 1680x1050. Alongside with E8400 at 3.4GHZ, 2X2GB of RAM.

What?

Every set of benchmarks I've seen, the GTX260 is no way near being on par with a 4890. It's on par/bit faster than a 4870 512MB, but that's about it.

This current gen, nVidia's cards have way too much of a price premium.

A 4890 would be the best upgrade when you factor in performance increase over a 4850 and the price of the card itself.

Cheapest one on overclockers now is £135 I think.

if your worried about psu size then just put psu calculator in google, then when you get your result take off about 150w as they always overcalculate

I still dunno. Antec's calculator is saying that my current system only draws 252 Watts. Do you think that 500W is safe for a Gainward 260?

I can probably scrounge a new graphics card out of this. Give them my 4850 and I get a replacement for my E8400 build.
Hey Macky,

I think a HD4850 is a superb gaming card although it's nearly one year old it certainly does a good job still! :)

I'd just thought I'd comment on your idea of selling your HD4850 to your parents is a bit dubious unless they play games, its not really a suitable card for a standard home server! :(

If they don't game and you really want a more powerful card for your Wolfdale machine then do the right thing and sell your card independently at auction or MM and put the proceeds as well as the chunk of money your folks give you towards a new shiny GPU!
