So sitting playing BF4 I hear a bang and everything goes off :/

Luckily I had a spare to test and it is definitely the PSU that has blown.

Now I don't have a huge budget (aka as cheap as possible), I remember the Hiper costing me about £50 back in 2006 (I know these weren't that well regarded but £50 and it has lasted me 9 years so I can't complain :D )

Spec is core i5 2500k (stock), Radeon 6850, 16GB RAM and 2 * SSD so I doubt it needs to be that beefy. Modular would be a benefit.

Any recommendations?

Cheers, i'll have a look at the ones suggested

Although I am starting to think maybe I should spend a bit more, my last PSU survived 3 different Mobo/CPUs, 2 cases and about 4 GPU's so if a decent one can do that it's a good investment!

I would certainly spend a little extra for a good quality unit, CX/EVGA B aren't worth looking at if you can afford it, and even if you can't there are usually better options

Do yourself a favour and buy yourself a quality psu. The EVGA Supernova GS 550w is a cracking psu built by Seasonic for EVGA and has a 5 year warranty. It is quite compact at only 150x150mm plus is fully modular. It has 540w on the all important 12v rail unlike the crappy Hiper that only had 360w.

1 x EVGA Supernova GS 550W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply £64.99
Total : £74.59 (includes shipping : £8.00 Ex.VAT).

It sounds like you have been very lucky. Back when they came out and started blowing up, many of us lost other components to exploding Hiper's. I lost a 2 week old DFI motherboard when mine went!!

The EVGA Supernova GS 550W is well recommended, seems to do well in a recent PC mag review. Though at that time it was £52, now its between £59.99 to £64.99

For a single GPU on budget though, I think the Superflower is a good price.

I ran a couple of Hyper PSU's, never had any issues with them, one was put in the skip recently as it had no usefull connections, being all captive molex. The other most likely still resides in an old PC my sister got from me, in their day they looked the part, metalic blue, LEDs, and lovely screw in cables with blue sleeving and red connections. I had a red non modular and blue fully modular.
