Hey guys,

Im trying to find a way of removing my HDD's from my case, i thought about replacing them with a SSD the same size but they are just to expensive.

So this is my plan, replace my 500gb HDD's (theres two) with a 1TB external HDD and get a single 240GB SSD for my OS and a few games that i play the most then installing the rest on the external, what do you think?

Thanks

Just curious, why do you want to remove the HDDs from the case?

Anyway...

Have you looked at the Crucial MX100 512GB SSD? It's very quick and is only £155 at OCUK (bought one the other week!).

Regarding making the HDDs external, the first thing that comes to mind so that so many games now are only accessed through clients such as Steam, Origin, Uplay etc., and they auto update quite frequently.

Would you be leaving the ext HDD on all the time or switching it off? That could prove to be a pain if you do switch it off and then have to update when you switch it on again.

If you have a Steam installation and plan to split the install between two drives a member on here recommended to me the fantastic steammover app, it makes moving the data between two drives really easy.

Hope that's helped some!

i only have titanfall and bf4 on origin so they will be on a SSD, when i install a game on steam i put them on different drives depending how often i play them.

yeh i will leave it on all the time, i want to remove them as then i no longer have to have a HDD cage behind my intake fans on my new case.

i was thinking about getting the hyperX fury 240gb on sale today

Getting an enclosure will be the cheapest option, I've had loads over the years connecting via USB2, eSATA and now USB3.

I always used to use Icybox and found their single eSATA boxes great but the dual docks over USB (the ones that hold the drives vertically) I found to be a bit flaky.

Check the reviews carefully before buying!

I've always hated buying external enclosures, they're either disproportionately expensive or appear to be decent quality but fail after a year with either poor power supply or dodgy transfer speeds. I end up just connecting the SATA cable directly and using a 4-pin adapter for the power, perfect everytime.

Is there a way to mod your case so you can fit the HDD in a space that wouldn't block your airflow? You could use some form of rubber band or cable tie configuration.

Keep your games on an internal drive. Externals are okay but they do often have power-saving features that might affect performance. Not an issue for regular data like music etc but for games you don't want your game stuttering because the drive heads keep parking.
