Hi all,
so i know i'm risking the harshness of the some of the petrolheads in here, but i would genuinely value some advice. so here goes.

Want to change my 14 plate Hyundai IX35 1.7cdti SE-Nav with another crossover/SUV of similar spec. I like the high driving position and i like tech. ;)

You know what's its like, you get the idea in your head that you want a new car and that's that!
The wife just changed her i20 for a Corsa and she loves it. The CarPlay is excellent.

Ideally i wanted my next car to be a PHEV, but i'm probably not ready for one yet as there still aren't that many about that grab my attention, and charging at home for the present time isn't practical. We do have a fast charging point at work for our pool car (BMW i3), but there'd be a queue for it reckon soon.

I do about 15 miles each way to and from work, covering all the different speeds (30, 40, 50, 60) on my journey so i looked at the outlander PHEV for that purpose.

Other cars that i've looked at:

  1. Mazda CX-5 (like the look of this)
  2. Peugeout new 3008 (Wicked MPG - allegedly)
  3. Honda HR-V (test drove this - nice drive, excellent MPG, allegedly)
  4. Mitubishi ASX (altough the PHEV due Nov 2017)
Cars i've dismissed from my list:

  1. Ford Kuga (way overpriced for crap ecnomoy)
  2. Vauxhall Mokka (feels like a step down from the IX35
  3. Kia Sportage (fuel economy seems as bad as the IX35)
  4. Hyundai Tucson (economy similar to IX35 - for more money)
  5. Volvo XC60 (nice but out of my budget)
  6. Renault Captur and Kadgar (nice but didn't quite wow me)
  7. Nissan Quashqai (simply gone off the look of them)
I accept that i may have to nigh on double what i pay now for the right car, on PCP, but i can offset some of that for much better MPG (and less fuel fillups) so i'm in a pickle of a dilemma to be honest.

So, let's have it please, SUV recommendations between £20-30k :D

I don't have a great deal to add to this but I've driven both a Mitsubishi ASX and a Kia Sportage.

The Mitsubishi looks and feels really outdated. It feels like a car that was released in 2005. The Sportage I drove wasn't even the very latest facelift, and yet it felt a lot more modern, refined, and better-equipped. Therefore I'd probably swap them around on your lists.

It's not the type of car I'm at all interested in, but getting hire cars for work lets me try out different things.

None of these seems like an upgrade from your Hyundai though really, so I have to question the point of changing. You might as well wait until you're ready for a hybrid and one takes your fancy.

Well.....this is the trick. I was hoping you guys could help me. :)
In all honesty, i'm utterly bored with the IX35. When i bought it i read reviews saying it was an unjoyous and dull ride and i thought "who cares about that", but 6 months in i found out what it meant and its true, its simply boring to drive. I've managed the past 20 months with it but now its past the hhalfway point in the PCP i'm itching to change up.
I just don't know........

Are the other options really going to be that much better on the ride/drive front?

Everything on your list is the same sort of car that's going to drive in the same sort of way.

Don't buy a raised hatch for fun then ;) get a proper big hatchback and it'll be much better at everything

Audi's don't really have the reputation as fun.. all he'd get is straight line speed, meh steering and meh fuel economy.. ?

Yeah, I guess I need to test drive a shortlist to get the answer as to whether any other SUV will drive differently.
I quite like the look of the new Peugeot 3008, but doesn't come out until next Jan. That said I like to look of the current 3008 that I went to look at today.
£20-30k is budget for whatever car I go for, be it new or used. It will still be on PCP though as I don't think our company will be running the salary sacrifice scheme anytime soon.

Edit: my ix35 will probably be worth about £13.5k and I owe £9600 on it

Anything in this sector short of X5 is going to be Meh to drive. And that isnt great in terms of fun!

Cars in this sector are eiher practical or comfy. If you want sport looks, the new Tiguan doesnt look too bad, the upcoming Seat Ateca might be a bit more interesting to drive.

Or how about a S max?

My wife changed fairly recently from an ASX to the CX-5 and we both rate the Mazda much better. Nothing actually wrong with the ASX, but the Mazda is a nicer drive, better interior room and boot and very similar on toys.

Actually the new X1 is pretty good.

Old one was a pack of crap and hideous to boot. The new one aint bad at all and actually is quite attractive.

You discount a few cars in your list due to poor economy yet want to buy a new car which is £20-30k when you already have a fairly new car because it is boring?

If you go for the eco models will you not just end up with another boring SUV and be thousands out of pocket making this all pointless?

Some of those pug 3008's take nearly 14 seconds to hit 60
