Couldn't find a particularly recent thread worth bumping so thought I might as well start a new one. I've dusted off the dreamcast and have been playing through a few of the old Resident Evil games, which means I have played each of the major RE games in the last year or so.

I just this instant finished RE2 as Leon... god damn that was easy, I remember it being much harder. Finished the game with a billion healing items and didn't even reload my magnum... all within 4 hours without knowing what I was doing. Going to start the game up with Claire soon, I never managed to finish her scenario because Mr. X terrified me as a teenager.

I also played through most of Code Veronica again, which I'm now placing at the bottom of the bundle along with Nemesis. It's just really boring and plays too slowly. Far too many huge treks back and forth the island base and the Antarctica mission is dull. To make matters worse, it makes you do practically the same thing with Chris. I never finished CV back in the day and I can see why now. But it is a lot harder than RE2. It also has the worlds most annoying boss fight, the tyrant in the back of the plane - can't really avoid his attacks and should you land against a wall the chances are it's instadeath because he blocks you in. Having lots of healing items and just shooting something until it dies, with little way of escaping his instadeath move, does not make a fun boss fight! Grrrr :p

Resident Evil 4 is by miles, absolutely miles the best in the series and in my humble opinion the greatest video game ever made. RE0, despite being a great game in itself showed the formula needed evolving and RE4 delivered on every single level. I disbelieve anyone who said they weren't scared when the 'right hand man' boss battle began :D

RE5 was an utter mess, completely bastardised what was good about RE4.

So, the best games in order for me go:
1. RE4
2. REmake
3. RE0
4. RE2
5. RE5
6. RECV/RE3

In terms of scariness:
1. RE0
2. REmake
3. RE4
4. RE2
5. RE3
6. RECV
7. RE5

In terms of difficulty:
1. REmake
2. RE0
3. RE4
4. RE3
5. RE:CV
6. RE:2
7. RE:5

What do you think? I pre-empt all those that think differently about RE4 by saying you wouldn't know a good game if it came up and punched you on the nose, even Zero Punctuation liked it :p

I don't recall playing RE0 but completed 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and Code Veronica. I'd play them over and over until I had maxed out all the weapons, including Resident Evil on the iPhone. :p I remember buying a gamecube just for RE4 and I don't regret it, it was the best in the series and one of the best games ever imo. OP did you ever play the mercenaries game after completing 4? That took me ages but I completed that too, every character, on every level with max stars. That was a challenge, but I agree with you, best game in the series by far.

RE2 was/is the best of them all.

Have you played them all recently? It really, really isn't :p

Far too short and easy, no real sense of dread, not a single challenging or well designed boss... Don't get me wrong, it's fun, but it's not amazing.

I didn't finish 0 or re4. This thread is making me consider doing so. :)
Do so :)

Actually, I think RE0 might be the hardest, hmm. And those evil squiggly zombies... argh terrifying! :( :D

I did play it a bit, but I found it a bit mindless and boring. Never unlocked the hand cannon :p

Back in it's day RE2 was amazing and it still is IMO. Hell i even enjoyed 3 which most people didnt. You say RE2 it's short but you have 2 scenarios for both characters so your looking at atleast 8 hours to do them all.

Back when I was a kid playing it a had a few bottom twitching moments such as when the virus ripped out of the reporters chest and the god damn tyrant smashing through walls and chasing after you. The music was damn spooky also

I hated it at first but forced myself to keep playing, and when I got the hang of it I was on it for weeks. I couldn't stop until I cleared it all. Mindless, repetitive, boring at times but VERY satisfying when you start clearing it because it was so damn tough. I'd only recommend it for the hardcore resi fans. :D

Great OP, I love discussions like this, especially when it's something I can relate to! Unfortunately I never finished the Claire scenario in Resident Evil 2 either, for the same reason as you. Bald dude with the trench coat... scary. :(

Also, when you mentioned the fight with the 'right hand man' in RE4, are you talking about the village chief? The big dude with the beard and the crazy eye who traps you in the barn and bends the metal bar across the handles so you can't escape? Come on you pansy, that wasn't scary in the slightest! By that point you already saved up enough cash for the RPG so you could just blast him once, then finish him off with the rifle when he transforms, easy. :p

For me Resident Evil 2 was the scariest, but I think my opinion is slightly influenced by how old I was when I played them. By the time I played Resident Evil 4 I was in my mid-teens, compared to only being 11 or 12 when I played through Resident Evil 2. I was going to copy your little list and alter it to my personal opinion but I haven't played all of them so it wouldn't be fair, though out of the ones I've played Resident Evil 2 is the strongest, for the atmosphere, setting, unlockables, characters and general scariness.

Resident Evil 5 has been by far the worst for me, taking the series in a direction that I don't think I want it to go in, there was far less horror and far more balls to the wall shoot em up action which is fine but it isn't Resident Evil. Saying that, I found the weird native indian type enemies really freaky in RE5, the tribesman and that really tall witch doctor type dude, he was kinda creepy but the monsters, the dogs and the Majini were just routine and not frightening in the least. There was never any real fear of running out of items or ammo either, I played through it on co-op with my sister and she played it through on Professional and some of the other harder difficulties and to be honest it didn't seem difficult at all. Compared to the sheer terror of running out of items in the earlier RE titles it makes RE5 pale in comparison.

Yeah, it wasn't great :(

I honestly think RE4 was at least partially dynamic with ammo - there better you were with it, the less you got, so it seemed! Unless you know where all the treasures are, and all the tricks for killing everything, every upgrade on the first play through was so essential.

I think I could write an essay on RE4... in fact... I think I have!

Having just completed it again, I can say with confidence that Resident Evil 4 is the best video game I have ever played. It just blows almost everything right out the water. Every section of the game poses a new challenge, there is just so much variety in the level design, even if you are essentially still laying waste to zombies and monsters left right and centre. Off the top of my head, the highlights include the incredible opening scene in the village, the hedgemaze and the bosses... oh my god the bosses!!!!! They are just incredible.

And furthermore, the game just keeps on going and going, so much damn effort must have gone into making this game because it never feels repetitive and always keeps you on your toes.

I played a bit of Red Dead Redemption over xmas and was impressed, but to me it's not even in the same league. I only mention this as RDR was IGN's game of the year. Here's the IGN review where they gave RE4 a whopping 98%:

Wow. I had some pretty high expectations for Resident Evil 4 and to my complete surprise the title actually exceeded them. This is simply the best survival horror game ever created. In fact, had it come out in 2004, it would have been my pick for Game of the Year.

With Resident Evil 4, Capcom has successfully -- triumphantly -- taken the franchise to the next level. It's really emphasized the "survival" in survival horror, too. You're oftentimes on the run for your life. And villagers, much smarter than any zombie, team up, dodge bullets, and do other nasty things that I will let you discover on your own. Then there are the boss fights, which are unexpectedly brilliant. This game is extremely scary, and that fear is intensified by the best graphics and some of the most eerie audio on Nintendo's console.

When you add in the new camera and action systems, as well as Leon's excellent new analog targeting function, you have a completely transformed survival horror experience. One that eclipses everything before it. Indeed, even after 20-plus hours of non-stop thrills, you won't want to put the controller down.

You don't own Resident Evil 4. It owns you.

An absolute must-have.

If you haven't played through it yet, you really need to, absolute genius.

Wow, you sure do like RE4. :p

I was disappointed that they didn't keep the pre-rendered backgrounds and that they went for the over the shoulder viewpoint. I was even more disappointed at the direction they took when developing the enemies though. I'm a huge zombie fan and it was a real kick in the nuts to have them pushed aside and replaced with parasites, it's probably why I haven't found RE4 or 5 to be particularly scary. In fact the only part I jumped at in RE4 was when you took control of Ashley and you're in the pitch black room full of the antique suits of armour, that was pretty damn intense and there wasn't any real enemy in the room, it was more the fact that if anything was to happen I had no means to fight back. That feeling of vulnerability is the scary bit and for me that's missing throughout the rest of the game and throughout the whole of 5.

There's something about zombies that I find truly scary, Las Plagas can't really compete.

Yep, besotted :D

I think they were zombies by another name really. They waltzed about and wanted you dead, I practically didn't notice the difference.

The armour room bit was really scary, especially when the suits came to life and started chasing you (all the way back to the safety of the next 'room' a good minute sprint away '). I also felt vulnerable / scared when:
- first village scene, pretty hectic difficulty curve. I don't think I've played another game that has gone 'got used to the controls? ok.... take this!' quite the same way
- the hedge maze
- the regenerator zombies
- the right hand man
- the village leader boss
- the sewers / invisible insects
- the first blind guy with knives for hands

That right hand man bit is horrible - *MASSIVE SPOILERS IN VIDEO*

Even watching it is scary

I'll watch that when I'm not restricted to a 2G connection. :D

Stuck in work on the night shift until 7am, yeah, it blows. By the way, where has all this love come from for Resident Evil 4? I hope you've downloaded the HD version from Xbox Live/PSN. Shamefully I've only gotten up to the lake monster, I've been meaning to play it more but other games have taken me away from it. Think I'll give it a massive playthrough this weekend and then start again with the Chicago Typewriter. :D

REmake
RE:CV
RE2
RE4
RE0
RE3
RE5

Would be my order. I don't see why there is hate for CV it had one of the best stories in the series. REmake is the true survival horror in my eyes. People moaned about the puzzles and item management but it made the game interesting and was more a thinking mans game. RE4 was a fantastic game in it's own right but was not survival horror.

Just started playing through nemesis. Why are the graphics worse than RE2?!

And the dodge function is just broken, really doesn't work.
