Resident Evil (Series)

Bah, that monster fight with nemesis was more annoying than the CV plane tyrant, so many F and C words were thrown around my lounge that it would have made Roy Chubbie Brown blush. So cheap! Soooooo cheap!!

Who on earth decided to make a fight where you can't see your health bar?! And who the hell decided to make nemesis be able to insta kill you from a 'modest limp' (just a scratch). It's so annoying, there is no possible way of knowing if you should heal or not, you shouldn't be made to dodge rockets if your character handles like a shopping trolly!!!

FFFFUUUUUUuUuuuuuuuuUuuuuuuuuume!

Almost smashed my dreamcast into pieces, never raged out so much at a game :o :p

Resident Evil 2 is the best one by a fair margin. For its day it was absolutely epic. You had 4 campaigns - two on each side of the city for each character. I remember borrowing one disc off my mate while he did the other.

Finally finished Nemesis just now, with a finish time of a whopping 8 hours - more like 12 I imagine with my wasted saves.

It was actually a lot better than I remembered it. As aforementioned, the back tracking in the game is fairly minimal and nemesis is really freaky, especially earlier on.

I believe I can now articulate another flaw of the first few RE games - item management. The games are so unforgiving at points that you learn never to heal and never to use powerful ammo except when absolutely necessary. As a result, the games actually get easier regardless of how much tougher the enemies get. For example, at the end of nemesis I realised I had conserved a large wealth of ammo. I quickly mixed up 72 magnum bullets and played the last section of the game in god mode, decimating everything in my path. This was also true in the remake which ended up giving you too much ammo by the end of the game - at the start when you only had the pistol the game was insanely challenging due to 3 hit deaths and respawning crimson zombies. By the lab you are wading around with 20+ shotgun shells singing 'trololololol!'. The balancing of difficulty throughout the series has gone up and down throughout the game almost at random, even within individual games. Heck, walk into a squiggly zombie in RE0 without the molotov cocktails and you might as well reload from your save point then and there if you can't run away easily.

On a more positive note, the final battle of nemesis was epic, what a villain and what a send off :)

I'm placing RE3 on par with RE2. Edit - I've changed my mind, I think it's better

Best:
RE4
REmake
RE0
RE3
RE2
RE5
CV

Now I just need to get a current gen console to play through 5 again. As far as I can recall, it was a great game spoilt by its structure and presentation. Half of the game was simply chasing a badguy who kept running away and the 'level' / stage structure to the proceedings completely took away any atmosphere that could have been built. There were also substantial filler sections that padded out the game length. Saying this, I'm willing to play again, bring it on.... :)

When I have a console I can play it on :o

I really rated CV on the Dreamcast and I'd played all the PS1 Resi games. Couldn't stand them now though, the pace and the loading each room, eurgh

WOW I am soooo happy.. I bought RE4 and CV on PSN+ For nice cheap price when it came out. Sooo being bored over the break i decided to start playing RE4 again. So i complete it for the umpteinth time and what do i find? Another section of game. Yes i originally had Operation Ada and had completed that but i had "Seperate Ways" a small 5 episode Ada game. I had always completed it on the GC and never seen it or heard of it before. To say i was happy was an understatement and played it till almost 4am! I loved the section of the game with the ships. Fantastic!!! Just goes to show that an old game can still suprise.. :D:D:D

Re2 and 4 are the best, but playing through 5 in coop with my girlfriend was pretty special, and I would much rather have that experience with future re titles.

In terms of which ones I liked (can only comment on ones I own):

1. RE1 Remake - Pure genius. I replay this about once a year. I love it.
2. RE2 - An old favourite - Dad got me it when I was 10 and was SO scary! The background music from the Police Station gives fond memories.
4. Code Veronica - I liked it but Steve's voice was annoying. I was glad when he died. The backgrounds were 3D rather than static but the game still felt like the older RE games.
3. RE3 - Good, but not the best.
4. RE Zero - Very good, but RE1 was better. Was a pain in the ass not having storage boxes and peeing about switching characters all the time. The story was a little wierd. Too many guns that had 0-100% ammo and could not be reloaded.
4. RE4 - Good but not the Resident Evil games that I loved.
5. RE5 - I rate this the same as RE4 really. Very good but not what Resident Evil used to be. In fact it should not be called Resident Evil anymore as it is a completely different game.

RE: Director's Cut is available on our EU PSN store.

RE2 and RE3 unfortunately are still only on the U.S and Japan stores, though you can easily make a U.S PSN account and buy some U.S PSN cards.

Are you sure about that? I don't think I can remember any.

So, finally finished Code Veronica for the first time. I've attempted to complete it many times and this go I was determined to see it through.

What a truck load of suck. I honestly can't stress enough the extent to which this is the worst resident evil game. The whole thing is a miserable experience with the only redeeming feature being the plot, which to be fair is a bit more complete than other RE games.

My biggest grip about it is the backtracking, which I have moaned about before so I'll try and keep my moans fresh. With that in mind, holy crap, things get so chronic when you start playing as Chris. In essence, you replay through a small part of Jills mission, but the mansion is blocked off, meaning you have to frustratingly circle round in loops for no other reason than to pad out the game span. Notably, there is a blocked off door, meaning you have to go up a floor and down an escalator to get to the same place. Why?! It adds nothing to the gameplay and once you have access to the second area you should be able to walk through that door, it's so unnecessary! The biggest offender though is a staircase that needs you to place a shotgun into it to access it. You run round the mansion only to find you have to go ALL THE WAY back just to deposit the stupid shotgun. This wouldn't be overly annoying if the save rooms weren't places so awkwardly. It's just an immensely frustrating and totally unfun experience.

I almost put my controller through the floor again at the end of the game. I was in control of Chris and there was dramatic music playing (signalling the end of the game) yet I couldn't find a 'dragonfly body' anywhere to open the final door. The answer was to trek back through the base (yay more backtracking!) and turn off the electricity so that you could trek to another part of the base (yay!) and remove two stones that you previously used for another puzzle, then trek again to another part of the base (yay!) to put them into some music boxes. Lots of lovely item management going on amongst irritating save room locations. It was just so obscure, there was no way on earth I could have sussed that out myself - there was nothing to imply that those stones would be needed after you used them once to gain items, and since I turned on the electricity immediately there was nothing to suggest there was anything to gain by turning it off. Crap!

Also I would like to bid a fond farewell to stupid cheap deaths and irritating save points. In the final battle the first time around before I knew what was going on Jill died and I was forced to replay the last 3 minutes of game-play again.

Games are supposed to be fun, not a chore! Awful!

Never play this game!

Edit - also "....ohhhhh, Steve" x 1000. Arghhh :p

Spoken like a new gen Resi fan. That is the whole point of survival horror. It's surviving not insta saves, continues and all that crap. It's the main thing I hate about the new action man style the game has gone which is because of the people moaning about it.

I personally love the item management and puzzle solving of the old resi games. It adds a lot of thinking to the game. I can understand why some people might hate this too.

Old-fashioned gameplay from a gone old age now.

But I agree as well. Most games these days tend to be "dumbed down/hand-holded" so to speak, and because we get so spoilt by them now and then going back to something older, I wouldn't be surprised if we end up easily finding it difficult and moaning about how dated and silly it is.

In a related subject, it also goes the same with people complaining about the RE tank controls and comparing them to other 3rd person games that move more fluid or feel closer to an FPS. Point is, the RE control system is deliberate and not many people seem to understand or get used to it. RE4/5 afterall, moves just the same as the older games, but from the over-the-shoulder perspective and no more fixed angles.

You say a new gen fan as if I don't like the original games...! Maybe read the OP and realise that it's me? :p

I like the old games but CV is rubbish, I challenge anyone to replay through it and not find it annoying. Everything about RE4 is better than it's predecessors, but I don't want to see the series follow in the footsteps of RE5.

As a co-op experience I can't fault Resident Evil 5, but that doesn't stop me being annoyed that it isn't in the mould of the traditional games. Obviously Capcom need to mix things up and prevent the series from becoming stale, which they did excellently in RE4, but for me they need to start going back to the roots a bit more, instead of going off in the distance. I'm mainly talking about the enemies though, I'd love to see a Resident Evil game this generation which carries the same enemies over from the first three RE games. The shambling, walking dead instead of the crazy villagers and parasitic monsters.

With that said one of the scariest enemies in any game of this generation for me was the giant Majini, I think it was the sound they make, followed by looking behind me and seeing this 10 foot human about to take my head off. :D
