Resolution and minimum framerates

I overclocked my GPU by just 20Mhz and now I'm getting solid 100+ FPS with same graphics settings I had before. How can just 20Mhz make such a big difference? Shall I overclock the VRAM too?

Here's a vid too:

Also noticed GPU usage sits at 97% almost constantly so seems like this site overclock has kicked my GPU up the butt lol Temps never go above 60c too
Your CPU is what's holding you back currently then, it'll probably struggle with any 1440p related tasks so improving its performance helps your GPU do its job.

My old 4790k@oced to 4,8 was holding back my 1080ti, took something like a Ryzen 3600 or intel equivalent to get the most out of that card at 1440p. That said, the 3600 is good enough up to and around the performance level of an RTX 2080s at which point you want to look at some higher core count and higher clocked Zen 2 parts or something like a Ryzen 5600 minimum. Currently using a Ryzen 3600 with a RX 6700 so roughly 2080ti performance and its being bottlenecked by my 3600 a little bit at 1440p. You won't always see this in the averages but minimums take a dump and they are the most important to improve.

But notice the cpu usage in game is around 47%? So surley it can't be a bottleneck
CPU usage in game is never 100% like GPU usage should be, most games are not CPU optimized perfecty. If you see a decent FPS increase just by overclocking your CPU then your CPU is the limiting factor. Like I said you could definitely just buy a GPU and no doubt your FPS will increase and everything will be fine as a monitor upgrade would benefit from just a GPU upgrade but there is the chance that in some CPU heavy games you'll experience a CPU bottleneck and have erratic FPS. I'm sure there are loads of people out there that that are CPU bottlenecked and simply don't know or are not bothered by it.

If just 1 CPU thread is high even 80%+ then you may see GPU being held back - just limitation of certain game engines. Fire up some original Crysis for example and it will probably struggle to hit 60 fps even with a 1080ti in certain places due to it hitting 2 cores max. Fire up some BFV or SOTTR and see the CPU likely get close to 100% usage across all cores. Not played RB6 before so no idea about demands of it.

I see thanks for the explanation. I'm going to try Overclocking the card and see how COD Cold War reacts. Currently got a few settings in game set to low and its bugging me lol

Another good indication of a CPU bottleneck is your GPU usage, ideally it should be 97-89% all the time while gaming, if it starts bouncing around on a well optimized main stream game (IE not an early access or Beta game) then youy CPU is holding your GPU back.

really? since when!? I've always had VSYNC off since GSYNC is matching the refresh rate of the monitor to the FPS I'm getting :/
I have V-Sync off and G-SYNC on and that usually works out just fine for me. I don't want input lag because sometimes I'm a bit of a quick sniper in BFV.

I know the theory behind tearing but I've very rarely experienced it myself for some reason. Even lately since upgrading to a 3090 where I'm getting FPS way over my monitors refresh rate and don't have any FPS caps set anywhere. Maybe G-Sync is just dealing with it.

Funny you should say that, I'm yet to see any tearing running three monitors for Sim Racing. I just get micro stutters when the frame rate drops ... Could really do with upgrading from the 3070 though, the time to do so is getting close.... but still can't justify the cost.

I'm quite sensitive to FPS drops, I can always tell when it drops below my refresh rate before looking at the FPS counter.
