Retrieving data from a hard drive I can't seem to access

Hello,

I've put a friends laptop hard driving in my computer in an attempt to recover some files from it, but I get an error.

I've no idea how to gain access without formatting it.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Shove it back in his lappy and download over a LAN.
Shove back in the lappy and copy on DVD's.
Grab a HDD file recovery proggy and search the drive when in your pc. Stuff like OnTrack, NTFS Recovery.

Also, could it be that the laptop you've brought the drive from has a high OS version or service pack level? You can get issues trying to access newer file systems from older OS levels.

There were some NTFS fixes bought in the XP SP2 or 3 if I remember rightly?
