My mates Laptop has died, (completely dead, no power) and as usual he has some documents and other files on the hard drive that were not backed up.

So assuming the drive is still functional how difficult is it to retrieve the files/docs. If I simply bought a usb - ide/sata adaptor cable and connected it up to my desktop/laptop should I be able to access the files, or is it way more complicated than that?

Be gentle, I'm not clued up which is why I'm asking just to help a mate out..

If the drive is SATA then you can just connect it straight to your PC or like you mention buy a caddy and put the drive in and get data from there.

That sounds good. My thinking was if a get hold of a USB-Sata/IDE adaptor then should the drive faulty in some way (sods law) then at least the fact it's at the end of a USB interface and not plugged straight into my motherboard.

Do OCUK do an adaptor, I've had a look but can't immediately spot one. I can seem them on Amazon but I don't think links are allowed here.

Cheers for the advice.:)

Now that looks like it should do the trick. I note it has what looks like a micro USB 3.0 port and my old laptop only has std USB 2.0 ports. Will that need an adaptor cable?

Both of them will come with a suitable cable. No need for an adapter.
