Retro console and games thread

Thats awesome Rebel.

Well, thanks to seeing some of the pics on here today, I have ordered some of the shelving that others have on the pictures on the previous page. Grabbed my old CRT from my parents and PS1 and they both run as good as the day they were bought. Shelving and a PS1 GCON are on the way, sorting through the consoles and cables etc now! Glad to finally get my retro stuff organised.

Nice setup Rebel!

My Mega Everdrive x5 came today!
Recently I have been used to Golden Axe on the Mega CD, the PS3 (Sega Ultimate Collection) and recently on my phone via Sega Forever.
However, little did I realise how crap 50hz is since afaik all Megadrive games run 17% slower than their 60hz counterparts (all game coding was written for 60hz).

I am going to have to perform the 60hz mod on the megadrive as everything feels frustratingly sluggish, to the point where it just isn't that enjoyable. Obviously in the 1990s I knew no different.

I have managed to use a new oscillator chip to overclock the Megadrive to 10mhz so the 60hz mod shouldn't be too hard. I believe these type of modifications can be discussed as they aren't related to piracy in any way.

It's a shame they changed the postage policy to 1.50 per item rather than 2.50 for up to 10 items.

Can understand it though. Once I ordered like 8 ps2 games and they came split from about 5 different locations so must sting them a bit

the postage can be your business ;) sell carts games at same or slightly cheaper and earn the profit on postage.

Modding a MD (including OCing it) was something i was planning on doing myself but never did get round to it, picked up a cheap and ugly "HD Graphics" model a year or 2 ago to do it. Maybe this year will be the year i attempt it , daft thing is my old man works for a small electronics firm so could probably "borrow" most if not all the bits needed.

Made a good start on an arcade machine over Christmas, nice to have another cabinet after taking my full sized pinball machine and Neo-Geo cabinet apart 3 years ago.

Needs full artwork now, and walls sorting which i damaged installing the machine, whoops!

I am in the middle of modding it as we speak!
Will create a post about it once it is all working.

I was originally tempted to get my PAL Mega Drive modded to 60Hz but after reading into it it still runs slightly off spec and can cause jerky scrolling so I picked up a japanese Mega Drive from eBay. I also picked up a Super Famicom as well as I prefer the original shape to the US model so I don't have the 50Hz letterboxed nastiness of PAL consoles. They both look fantastic running through my OSSC.

So had some time to start faffing with my Framemeister and new RGB connection cables. It really is a clever little device and provides a crystal image from SNES & Amiga onto my 1080p TV. Loads more to come this was just a quick throw together to test on my desk.

New year's resolution of mine is to actually spend time up in my game room with my old systems! I played through only a few old games this year and really enjoyed doing so, and have a nice build up of GameCube titles to start for the first time! May get a new Ikea kallax unit to put it all on too as it looks a bit untidy right now. Only issue is i would need to have the unit away from the wall to allow the back of the CRT to fit.

How much time do you guys spend actually playing your old systems and games? I tend to wait for a quiet time in modern releases to go for it. That would be now but I've decided to restart witcher 3 and am really enjoying it and feel heavily invested.

Looks like a crisp image, could do with a Framemeister for my console collection but really wanted a solution in which all my systems are connected ready for use and i suspect that means a Scart block (circa 10 consoles) of some sort into the Framemeister, unless you have a neater solution?
I don't think there is a near one, I have a large AV amp which I am planning to use for all the connections, but no Scart on it so always a compromise.

In my early 30's, would play for around 10 hours per week, but as the decade rolled on, far less time. Not due to lack of time, but due to lack of interest/motivation, it's kinda the way it goes when you get older. I used to collect all sorts of retro consoles, computers and games going back to the ZX80, had them all boxed thinking how special they are, but now at age 40, I just see it all as junk. There's lots of retro collectors out there where it's clear they have £1000s (or perceived) worth of retro games, just look at their YouTube videos, but they're typically still in their 20's or 30's, and they'll probably start asking themselves in the not too distant future "god look at all this junk I've accumulated, I really need to get rid of it and get this place tidy".

Kid you not. That's where I am today.
(See my MM thread to prove this :p)

I can understand That, as long as you had enjoyment out of collecting or playing at some point then I guess it has been worth it!
