Retro console and games thread

I have the first GC model if that helps. I see there are some hdmi adaptors that plug in to the digital out. I already have an action replay for playing games from US and Japan.

Just wondering if its worth getting the hdmi adaptor and not sure what else is out there for it.

The Retrobit Prism looks quite good but I would check out some reviews first. If I was on the market for one, I'd probably look at that. I believe it is based on the carby gc hdmi adapter, but is easier to update the firmware.

With regard to swiss, I believe you need certain games as an entry point to load it. Wind waker is one I know of.

I'm interested in getting a GCloader for my gamecube, as the laser has died. However, it is so easy using the Wii and and Nintendont that I haven't rushed into anything.

As I understand it there is now a version of GC Loader that is solder free. Should make it easier,aside from taking the machine apart and then putting it back together,

I think the save game exploit is one method butyou can load swiss via the memory card sd adapter or the SD adapter that plugs in the expansion slot under the console and then using the Action Replay to load Swiss.

Tempted to get a gb player too as there is an qlternate software for it without needing the disc.

The GB Player software is rubbish, the one you've referred to is considered the go to. You can import GB Players via eBay for a fair price.

I'd be interested how the Prism works out.
 
Ordered an Anbernic 351P retro handheld from AliExpress. I've fancied one of the Chinese retro devices for a while, and considered a Super Console X Pro, but decided on going handheld. About £95 all in. Comes with "10,000 games".

Will look to install AmberElec on there, if I can figure it all out :D

Ive got a 351V, its a cool little device and great for everything upto PSOne. I installed custom firmware on mine but not sure how much difference it actually makes.

Is that the Gameboy-looking one?.

They seem really impressive devices, from what I've seen. Tbh, I even considered one of the budget ~£30 handhelds like x7 or x12 or whatever, which are impressive in their own right given the pricetag, but decided to get a better one.

Yeah thats the Gameboy Style one, i wanted it mostly for Gameboy, SNES, Mega-Drive ect so the screen is the correct resolution for those, the P is better for GBA i believe.
 
The Anbernic devices are well over-rated. I'm sure most Youtubers are paid for providing great reviews.
The d'pads aren't anywhere as good as made out, and they're not very ergonomic at all. I have the RG350M which is all metal, and whilst appears well made due to the natural weighty feel of metal in the hand, it's just not an enjoyable experience.

If anyone is considering a cheapish Chinese handheld to play old 8 and 16 bit games, the Powkiddy RGB10 Max 2 is the one to get

Be aware also that you will notice latency, similar to input lag, so you best try and turn on ruahead in Retroarch. This will likely be OK for most emulators, but these RK3326 devices just aren't powerful enough to get decent performance on the harder to run emulators/games, especially with runahead enabled.

What are your thoughts on early 4:3 640*480 LCD TVs for hooking up a PS2 etc? I've found a RGB SCART one 20" which looks nice but I'm wondering if it's none of the benefits of an old CRT with none of the benefits of a larger modern flatscreen?
 
We'll, my RG351P arrived about a week ago. I've not had much spare time, but have started to get it set up.

Stream of consciousness incoming...

Initially played with it as it came, just to check it out. Quite impressed with what it can cope with. Dreamcast Crazy Taxi seems a step too far (you can play it, but it's a bit low on frames), but PS1 plays perfectly, and you can get good enough performance from Sega's Atomiswave arcade platform (Knights of Valour and Dolphin Blue are just about a pass).

Bought a decent micro-SD to replace the dodgy budget one it came with, and installed AmberElec. I've ditched the 10,000 games it came with, for the most part, and have gone with my own collection. 10k is just too many to navigate!

The promised WiFi dongle didn't come in the box: I just bought a compatible one from Amazon. Not tried it yet though.

I've mostly been playing Super Bread Box on the C64. Bought that from itch.io a couple of months ago: it was made in 2013, and kind of blows my mind how good the C64 can still be with modern game design sensibilities applied.

It's reasonably comfortable to use, particularly when you're not using the shoulder buttons: not overly keen on the positioning of those. It's not as good as a proper PS controller for something like Tony Hawks 2, and I suspect it'll not be great for Unirally on the SNES either. Perfectly good for most 16-bit stuff, though.
 
I have picked up an old-ass CRT for playing my PS2. I've connected it used SCART although I'm fairly sure it's too old for full RGB.

Anyway the main problem is that It's mono sound and has poor quality audio when using its speaker or connecting to my proper speakers via the 3.5mm headphone connection (also mono sound).

Ok I will use composite and plug video into the TV via a composite to scart adapter and plug red and white straight into my speakers' aux in.

However using composite out I only get a black and white image. This is based on the original composite cable, a component cable that has an extra yellow connector, and also an s-video cable that has a yellow connector.

The PS2 is set to RGB and the scart image was in colour. The TV has scart and yellow and white inputs, but one AV 'channel'. I only have one thing plugged in at a time.

Any ideas how to get colour composite?
