Retro console and games thread

Loving this thread, just reading through has made me want to start collecting old consoles again, picked up a PS1 with Resident evil 1 and 2 for 11.50 inc. p&p.

Looking to track down a snes at the moment, is it worth going for an NTSC version as opposed to the pal version ? both seem freely available on the bay.

Go for NTSC. It's easier to mod to play PAL games than a PAL console is to play NTSC. If you weren't planning on doing this in the first place, I'd recommend you do as it's reletively simple.

I shall keep an eye out for an NTSC one then,

Out of interest is there any reason the US snes looks so completely different, where as the famicon and the pal snes look the same?

What do you folks class as retro? For many people it's different. For me it has to be mid 90s or earlier. Obviously that doesn't mean something after then can't be collectible. :) Just not retro to me.

Retro for me means anything pre Playstation1/Sega Saturn. I grew up with Atari's, Amiga's and a BBC Micro so anything past 1994 ish doesn't count as retro to me.

Although I can't believe that the Playstation is 18 years old this year. I remember buying my PS1 on release date in 1995 after saving for a year (400 odd quid was expensive for a 9 year old). Went 4 years without a memory card which made playing decent games quite difficult. Also remember the original demo disc that included games like Jumping Flash. Think this is it ...

Realising how old the PS1 is makes me feel old. I started it with the Spectrum ZX and Commodore 64. I remember playing Ridge Race on holiday then seeing how perfect it looked on Playstation I think Ridge Racer was the very first Playstation release as the code on the case is something like 001. I do think the only difference graphically I can remember is the arcade version had a rear view mirror. I may be wrong as it was a long time ago now. :)

Can any1 help me decide between a SNES and N64?? (I use to have a SNES tht my dad bought back in the 90s but the system was a bit faulty, Screen looked fuzzy, But I still played it e.g Mario All stars, Micro Machines etc and loved every moment untill it got binned lol). N64 looks very good with 3D games. Can't choose

thanks

Only you can decide. Sounds to me like you might prefere the N64 for its 3D goodness. They're both amazing consoles. Make sure if you do opt for the N64 that the pad is in good condition as the 3D stick wore badly.

That ones later judging by the games, the music doesn't sound familiar either.

Yep that's not the one I remember either. No idea why I posted the wrong video. :o
I do remember that the original had Jumping Flash, an ESPN extreme sports demo and the 3D T-Rex. Oh and I think it had Battle Arena Toshinden.

Right. I'm keeping my eye out for a bargain on the bay for a Dreamcast thanks to the dreamcast nostalgia thread! I hope your happy OP.

Oh god what have I done, thanks to this thread I have now bought a megadrive and a dreamcast can't wait for them to arrive getting bored with modern games. Just need to find a crt tv before they arrive.
