Reverse Gear When Moving Forwards

Actually, now I think about it - I have done this... in the Baja. In fact, I have it on video too.

I was off roading and got the car grounded with the rear wheels spinning. I was trying to get the car into reverse but couldn't. On reviewing the video I can see that my wheels were still spinning which was stopping me put it into reverse.

I've been in a van that had this happen.

Was on a school minibus. Only about 15 of us there, and our R.E. teacher who didnt drive the busses that much was driving us to a hockey match. It was a merc sprinter, cant remember where reverse was, but think it was where he expected 5th to be or something, and doing about 60 on an NSL road he just shoved it straight into reverse.

Didnt lock the wheels, but made an almight bang that probably nuked the gearbox, we did carry on with momentum before he pulled over to inspect what made that allmighty bang

he never lived it down :D

Does engine braking and weight transfer not exist in your world?

Enough backwards torque to break traction sure, but locked? Locked surely means stopped dead, which would mean the engine is stopped dead also but that isn't the case. In a 'shift lock' situation you've normally shifted down so aggressively that the engine is over-revving.

Break traction ? Lock the wheels? Same event really.

Yeah only breifly, much like jabbing the brakes would.

Done it loads in single seaters with sequential boxes.

The CTR has reverse lockout, but my Swift Sport doesn't. I've tried a couple of times to find 6th in my Swift to be met with a nice healthy crunching.

I also managed to smoke the tyres in my CTR when performing a money shift. I nearly soiled my pants thinking I'd killed the engine for a few seconds, then carried on gunning it. I wonder what the DC2 driver behind me thought. :o

Saw the mythbusters episode with this. They tried on 'stick shift' and their stupid indicator stick automoatic type. Neither let them engage the gear at 30 or 40mph :(

Just after I passed my test I was messing about with my Punto just trying things out and didn't realise you could do serious damage to parts etc...

I tried throwing it into reverse rolling down a hill at 35MPH. Lots of crunching but no joy.

Also turned the engine off and then back on again down the same hill at 35MPH and that worked fine.

:eek:At what point did you think yer I think this is a good idea?

Some trucks will do this with ease, automatic Scanias have a lock out to prevent this, usually, the gearbox will rip itself to bits.

My car makes a grinding noise if I try to put it in reverse even when rolling forward really slowly. I have to be stopped to get it in reverse with no noises. :o

Does the English language not exist in your world?

Clarkey answered for me, as usual you failed to read my post and comprehend its meaning. I'm sure Mike understood too.

Interesting side note: Fly by wire throttle lets some electronic stability programs boost the throttle to prevent engine braking from breaking traction. Engine braking will never lock the wheels (unless something is catastrophically wrong), it's why engine braking is better than brakes in a lot of situations.

Holy thread resurrection...

Lets say you select reverse and with your foot on the clutch start the engine. You then get another car to tow you up to 70mph (the safe legal speed limit) and bring up the clutch. Someone needs to youtube this so we can all learn.

What about if you put an auto in to Park whilst still moving quickly, would that destroy the gearbox? always woundered this

No, did it the other day on my drive way, just locks the back wheels(ish)

I always go into reverse on my auto when rolling forwards, likewise i go from R to D when reversing without touching the brake

Shifting in to R while going slowly forwards, and D while going slowly backwards, is one of the true pleasures of owning a torque converter based automatic.

I love auto's don't think I'd ever go back to manual, and I have a Volvo s60, can't even imagine how good the new bmw ones are

Cant do it on a merc :( Gear shifter auto locking pin which is speed activated

The new ZF 8HP transmission used by BMW, Jaguar and probably some others is, I think, the best transmission ever to exist; wonderfully smooth thanks to the torque converter, great gearing spread whilst retaining close ratios for optimum economy and performance, very quick shifts.

Diesel 8HP lulz

Ive been youtubeing and googling this topic and there is so little

Myth busters found you can't select reverse whilst on the move hence my plan to select it before you start
