US: Revolution

The show is still cheesy as hell, and always feels somewhat contrived, but it's picked up considerably since the first few episodes. This half of the season has been much stronger IMO.

Agreed it's getting much better - quite an interesting story they're spinning!

The guns they were using at the end of the episode ... they could've at least spruced them up with some wiring or blue glow or something - looked exactly as they should if they were nade launchers :p

It's a railgun not a plasma rifle or something futuristic
Large prototype naval guns look like this
BTW that projectile is moving at mach10 about 7600 mph

the finished versions will look similar to what BAE's will look like

Some people have made their own mini ones that shoot BB's , hit youtube up and even amateaur hour ones don;t have tuns of wires just a bunch of capacitors

@arknor, there won't be any rail guns the yanks pulled the plug once they got their lasers up and running, iirc they'd spent 100B$ on the rail gun project.
It's the navy that wants railguns
the air force wants lasers

lasers fire a straight beam so don't make very good offensive weapons for ships because they cant fire from beyond the horizon like a railgun can because of the trajectory arc.

potential to fire at stuff 200miles away and thats with current tech!
They were set to start testing GPS guided projectiles last year.

How much energy would you need for a laser to travel 200miles?

Why did they mention "coil guns" yet the anonymous soldiers are clearly brandishing revolving grenade launchers like this one http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milkor_MGL ?:confused::confused:

This is easily the dumbest sci-fi I've ever seen.

Ok firstly the rounds clearly weren't explosive you'd have seen an explosion rather than chunks being gouged out of the victims bodies, Secondly you try making a coil gun that doesn't look hefty hell even the small ones that are designed as nail guns are pretty beefy, and thirdly the rounds were the size of a fist you make a gun that has to fire slugs like that smaller it won't happen.

They are definitely using these http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/6G30 revolving grenade launchers and the muzzle blasts are indicative of a conventional chemical propellant.

Coil guns would be extremely heavy, producing no muzzle blast and would require a large 30kg backpack full of capacitors.

LOL.. Love the enthusiasm but...

It's Sci Fi. the laws of science and nature don't apply! It's fiction.

They can be bent, ignored, extended, invented or imagined. It's the nature of the beast. I still find Charlie irritating.. I'm sure she's bi-polar, one minute she's all fluffy kittens and save my bro. The next, can we kill some more!!

Indeed she needs to be killed in the most brutal drawn-out way imaginable then this show would be Awesome!

As for the no muzzle flash part you are technically correct in the way that there would be no flash produced from the propellent however some higher powered coil Guns upon firing can due to friction between the barrel & the outer surface of the slug can produce a muzzle flash like effect due to the white hot particles that were ripped of the slug/barrel are propelled out behind the slug.

no muzzle blast
rail gun fires , huge stream of plasma behind the projectile.

That muzzle would flash

and @ 0:25 and @ 0:28 look at the tunnel the railgun fires out of glowing like hell is on the other side

the projectile moves so fast and has so much kinetic energy the air behind it is superheated and turns into plasma which is where the muzzle flash would come from and thats only a low power rail gun current railguns are 3-4x as powerful, it's easily possible that a hand held railgun could have a muzzle flash.

anyway your arguing about this when there is stuff in the show like those pendants that can heal wounds

Rail gun != coil gun

Rail gun uses very, very high current through 2 "rails" that melt after one shot.
Coil gun uses a series of electromagnets.

Given that a coil gun using current tech will have a lower muzzle velocity than a conventional weapon there will be no sparks as a result of friction. Also even with the backpack full of capacitors it would only allow you to fire once and would then need to be recharged, not to mention the risk of electrocution making it even more impractical as a weapon.

Guys, you realise this series also brought us nanites that cover the entire globe and "eat" all the energy hence the blackouts?

Its not to far a reach to think that the same people that came up with this tech have also invented a more portable coil gun. They are in "The Tower" which has already been stated is the US Military's jewel i.e. all manner of stuff has been invented here.... Let it go :p
