My CPU fan keeps revving up and down. Its quiet when its idle say on the desktop or whatever, if im doing anything but playing a game my computer is nice and silent.

As soon as I start up any game, the CPU fan revs up but it goes damn loud like jet engine loud, it wouldn't be so bad if it just stayed on one loud sound, but its revving up and then drops back down then revs up and down, and its damn annoying.

What is up?

Is there any other way of fixing the noise like help making it quieter or at least not rev as the reving is what makes it annoying than replacing the actual fan.

What motherboard do you have? There will probably be some settings in the bios to disable it from doing so.

MS-7046

Pretty sure its an MSI (computers pre-built, I've upgraded the gfx, ram, psu)

Hi,

The monitoring software regulates the fan depending on cpu temp, when you start doing anything which loads the cpu ie a game the temp will rise and the fan will speed up to keep the cpu cool.

Are you using the stock cooler - upgrading to a Arctic freezer or zalman will help more efficent than stock coolers.

Check your bios settings to see if you can change the temperature setting for the cpu, you may need to check the manual for your mobo.

Or download motherboard monitor which you can set the fans manualy,

Hope the above helps :) .

Cheers.

What would you rec out of:

My processor is a Intel Pentium 4 550J (3.4 GHz). And I do have a mounted pipe over the fan, so that air travels through the pipe and out of the case instead of spreading.

Basically I need something that keeps it cool and quiet.

Hi,

I used to own a p4 550 which I used the Arctic freezer pro, idle was around 50c load around 55 - 60c also this was overclocked to 3.8ghz.

Using this today on my conroe rig, just about audable at full pelt, I manualy running aroung 1800 rpm.

Also check the Scythe range and tuniq tower (if your case is big enough).

Some links below which may be of interest.:)
