I got a bit suspicious a few weeks back when I went out with Chris (Kip02 off here) for a drive and he followed. He commented on how he noticed a bit of smoke when we got to the pub. I didn't think all too much of it until..

Forward a few weeks later and I myself noticed a plume of white smoke under heavy acceleration when overtaking a bus. So I checked my oil which seemed fairly low (min mark) and put 750ml to max out on the dipstick.

Forward to today a week and a bit since topping up and around 400 miles where I check my oil and it's back on minimum, I double checked this each time making sure the engine was up to operating temp and checking around five minutes after stopping the car. I now require another litre?

I started the car earlier tonight and left it idleing (the car was still warm as I'd just got home from work). After about a minute or so a small amount of white smoke started to plume out of the exhaust. This was constant and did not seem like condensation. This ties in with the smoke I notice occasionally when driving.

A Google seems to suggest

CCV Valve
Valve stem seals
Worn rings

It does seem a fairly common issue across various forums

It doesn't seem to be leaking oil, can it be burning if there is no blue smoke . There is no mayo on the dipstick or cap, coolant seems fine and car temperatures are also fine.

Anyone have any ideas?

Yep should be blue but I'm certain it's just white smoke. Phil W taking it back isn't an easy option, it's around 60 miles away and I have ties with work during the week. I will more than likely be contacting him soon about this though.

I do 15 miles each way to work so 30 a day, fairly spirited but often don't get the chance due to traffic.

If it was worn valve stem seals I'd expect blue smoke, ditto for worn rings.

Worth a try, it could be leaking from the oil filter gasket and burning when dripping onto the exhaust (hence no visible leakage).

I don't think white smoke is connected to burning oil?
Coolant?

Coolant possibly but that seems fine as does the engine temperature, I'm sure if it WAS the coolant after owning the car nearly a month I'd have had the coolant warning light come on and would have required a topup by now.

Think I'll get the oil changed.

Get a National oil and filter change done if you trust the local branch - 33 quid for the right stuff and its no great loss if it later turns out to have been a total waste of time.

Note that of all the M54 engines its the M54B22 which is known to be the heaviest on oil. When I sorted out lease cars on my placement the girl upstairs had a 2.2 from new and it used a litre every 1500 miles from the day it rolled off the transporter apparently.

I believe they're ***** about not allowing cars with engines bigger than 2l?

Didn't you have a whole world of trouble?

Going to have to agree with Fox here. National will a) generally put the right oil in and b) not charge you the Earth to do it.

Seriously? Yikes.

Run it up and tell us if you are getting any gunk out of the exhaust, thats a better indication of whats wrong, also, pulling the plugs out will tell you straight away whats wrong with it.
