rG-Tom-like Oil Usage?

A litre of oil every 1k miles :(

I don't think I could put up with that.

Me either, since i fixed mine it uses no oil between services :)

Its a luck of the draw / some engines are designed to burn oil, i think having to stick and check the oil all the time would really make me hate the car.

mine has a light, it tells me when i need more oil! :p i check it every 500 miles manually anyway but the light so far works :p Even at doing double average miles that's only once a week, no hardship

So far...

It'd fully be at the back of my mind when driving. Then you've got the added cost of extra oil (£10 a litre for the good stuff?).

Not to mention the extra weight from carrying the oil in the back :D

just under six quid a litre which atm is lasting 900 miles.....so £6 of oil every £210 of petrol, not THAT bad in the grand scheme of things

Engine oil's main function is to reduce friction.. surely it's obvious where it goes!! :p

Not really? Hence why most engines don't actually burn much if any oil between services.

What makes these engines different I guess is my question?

I am wondering if the VANOS eats it as the oil seals give way (Which can be as quickly as 30k miles from new if the stuff on the internet is to be beleived) but my technical knowledge sucks so yea.

I said this in Tom's original thread, only to be shunned by the "people in the know". However from what I have read, and what I believe true about the VANOS units, it is more than possible for them to contribute, but usually via leaks rather than "using" it.

surely a seal gone, that can't be right. even our 'oil-burner' derv with additional oil leak doesn't consume anywhere near that :p

Oil change @ National for £35

Shall I go ahead and try this then?

I don't quite understand how rG-Tom's usage can go from 400 miles to 900

Weird cars :o

Tom, it wasn't white smoke that i noticed it was black bit like a diesel if it had booted it. It only happened now and again it wasn't constant black smoke only seemed to happen if you were accelerating hard.

Sorry you ain't got it sorted mate.
