Rice cookers?

I really don't understand why people have so much difficulty with rice.
1 person - 3/4 mug of rice, 1 3/4 cup of water. Bit of salt, stir. Put lid on, put on hob and boil from cold. Stir once (keep lid on, and just swirl it). It'll be ready in about 14 minutes.

Exactley. How does rice know if it's being heated by an electric/gas stove or a rice cooker. Use a non stick pan and seriously what is the difference?

Wait 'til June, head to your nearest university Campus and go searching for the oriental folk that are moving out. I'm not intending to stereotype in a derogatory manner, but most of them go to university and buy a new rice cooker each. I remember in first year going into a flat where there was 3 or 4 oriental people living there and they had a rice cooker each. And they leave them behind when they go home for the summer because they have nowhere to put them, so they'd probably either let you take one or you could just take one yourself!

To save £20? You sir, are a *****.;)

I've started using Jamie Oliver's way of cooking rice and it's perfect every time (ironically, unlike Uncle Bens).

http://www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/rice-recipes/light-fluffy-rice
Basically wash rice (to remove starch that makes it all sticky)
Boil for 5 minutes.
Put in colander
Cover with foil
Put colander over boiling water for 10 minutes.
Perfect non sticky non stodgy rice no rice cooker required.

Do you eat rice a lot? Pretty much every day?

Buy a rice cooker.

And you have a family bigger than 3?

Get two rice cookers.

Only eat rice twice a week?

Don't bother.

Oh, and I recommend Japanese made rice cookers. I'm Chinese and I'm pretty sure every one of the rice cookers my parents have are Japanese made. I know my one is.

How many do they have? :O

They run a Chinese takeaway so they're an exception :p

3 'industrial size', 2 medium size and a small family one.

One industrial and one medium are back ups. The others are used every day.

Most asian families have 2 rice cookers in the house. And when the kids fly the roost, you bet they'll get a rice cooker.

1 mug of rice
rinse
stick in saucepan
1.5 mugs of water from the kettle
stick in pan, salt
stir once
lid on
low heat for about 13 mins until water has gone

spend rice cooker money on years supply of rice or a fumble with a kerb crawler

same approach works perfectly for pilau type rice, fry spices, garlic, onion, mushroom or whatever you like then follow the above

This. Learn how to cook rice properly, you will get good consistent results and not have to store another appliance.

My slight variation.

1 Mug Tilda Basmati rice
leave in water to soak for 30mins+
rinse + drain rice
add enough water to just cover (prob ~1.25 mugs) + 1tsp salt if desired
bring to boil with lid on
turn hob right down & leave for 10mins

cooking time takes less and rice is tender as it has been soaked for ages.

This isnt the place to argue about how to make rice the best way its just about rice cookers. If some people want to use a rice cooker then let them and you keep to cooking it your own way.

Cooking directions entirely depend on the rice and type of rice though

For instance, I only ever eat Japanese rice now ... so for me it is take 1/4cup of rice (1 portion), add 1/3cup water. (no need to wash the rice I use)
Bring to boil
Turn to lowest flame, put lid on ... and simmer for ~10min
Turn off flame, leave to stand for 10-15min.

Serve ... job done :)

I am going to get a nice rice cooker though at some point, as I'm too lazy to have to actually time stuff lol

Got the rice cooker this afteroon. Made a curry tho not a good one as forgot i didnt have any chillis on hand and forgot to add garlic and stuff.

Anyhow.

Any idea about ratio for rice to water for 2 cups as i probably did it wrong with 2 cups of rice and 4 water. I presume thats why it bubbled like mad?
