Ricky Gervais -Armageddon

If you take what Gervais does to his subject matter literally, like with most things, it takes the fun out and isn't funny.

If you take what he's saying figuratively and then apply that to the premise he sets up, he's brilliant. You have to see the world the way he does though. If you don't, you'll likely find it not funny or offensive.

I find that people find him "too much" or get offended by him, funny.

So I guess that makes me woke.

I think it doesn’t help the show that some of the audience for the filmed show (Armageddon) seemingly are in the camp of “hurrr say the offensive thing durrrrrrrrrr yeah attack the thing I dont like burrrrrRrRRrRr” - whopping and yelling awkwardly in moments that probably aren’t really in the spirit of the way Ricky wants these jokes to be perceived (or even seen to be perceived).

Many of the positive viewer reviews seem to relish in the fact that the material is offensive. That’s just the wrong way round to enjoy something, IMO. It’s never ‘good’ just because it’s offensive.

Likewise, relishing in something just because someone else finds it offensive is a show of a weak and cowardly personality, IMO. There is a massive difference between something funny being offensive, or even saying something offensive to be funny, and actually finding or seeking enjoyment in upsetting someone else.

Yes. See his overuse of the C word in Afterlife as a prime example of this. Hurrr crude word funny.

Was pretty average, got a few laughs but it’s miles off Animals and Politics. Too many rehashed jokes (same goes for his previous two specials tbh) and still relies on stuff from the old podcasts such as Chinese paedos etc.

He’s well past his peak both as comedian and a writer. You could say he’s resting on his laurels…

Chappelle’s ‘The Dreamer’ is now out on Netflix.

… and it blows Ricky out of the water, IMO (as always).

There’s some low brow / low hanging fruit to get through at the very start that made me feel a bit uncomfortable, but it’s not long before the usual Chappelle charisma comes though.

Just watched Dreamer. It was OK. Not his best. Trans/Disabled stuff wasn't funny. Chris Rock, Will Smith slap, Chapelle stage attack stuff was very funny. Story at end was average. About the same as Armageddon for me if I had to score them.

About sums it up for me too. But I preferred Armageddon tbh

Where's the good stuff at then?

Last 'good' comedy I saw was Stewart Lee almost 2 years ago in Swindon, half the show was focused on some bit of paper that fell from the ceiling of the venue...

Yeah I thought it was great tbh, you all must know what sort of stuff to expect from him so don’t watch.
He’s been all around the world with this show, must have made millions.

Last of a long tradition, now killed by wokism or diversity.

Some of it was funny but he tended to kill it by carrying on the joke a little too long instead of moving on. Not a patch on the previous specials.
Bit like he keeps saying, he's a millionaire he doesn't care, if Netflix are going to keep throwing £££ at him he'll keep producing it.

Never heard of Dave Chapelle so I'm about 30 minutes into the Dreamer.
I prefer Rosie Jones.

Really?! :o :o :o

If you were to start anywhere, I wouldn't suggest The Dreamer because it references earlier work.

Sticks and Stones is probably his most accessible.

There is a 8ish minute clip on YouTube of Dave on Michael Jackson and R Kelly (search "Micheal Jackson And R.Kelly | DAVE CHAPPELLE - Sticks And Stones" without quotations) which is a good demo.

Watched the dreamer last night, laughed more in the opening 10 minutes than the entirety of armageddon personally.

The Netflix specials Chappelle has done are good, but killin them softly (his 1st ever special) is leagues above them. If you want to start anywhere that's where you go.

He's no Stewart Lee as a stand-up.

Aside from The Office which was an all-time great, and the cartoon podcasts I enjoy in bed before turning in, I can take or leave everything else.

Watching vids of his bullying of Robin Ince and people in his production team, it's really difficult to reconcile the co-creator of The Office with someone who had one great idea, and then moved in ever-decreasing circles of the same ideas ands then call him a great, he's always someone I think as of "punching down" that's not a characteristic I admire in a comedian.

His descent into nuance free and intelligence free woke-baiting seals the deal for me.

Looks and sounds like a tired old man who thinks he's edgy when he's actually bereft of ideas and whose wealth and arrogance have consumed his obvious talent.
