Ride safe, get a decent helmet.

Sad indeed!:(

 why on earth would you buy a helmet that dosnt fit correctly? theres so many to choose from in al different shapes and sizes, it might take a while to find one that suits you, but it just seems madness that you would settle for something less than optimal fitting, especially on something so important.

Good question.

I have an oval head and have found it impossible to find a helmet that fits.
Due to shape of my head I end up having to get an XL which is far too wide and never tightens up correctly.

After visiting many shops and trying on so many helmets I lost count, I had to resort to buying on line, I now have 3 (Lazer, Specialized and Abus as they were all recommended for my head shape) that don't really fit as well as I would like, but that's the best I have managed in 4 years of looking. My lbs's are at a loss as what to suggest as everything they ordered in just doesn't fit correctly to be of any use in an accident.

I am limited to Arai motorcycle helmets as they are the only ones that actually fit me.

Surely that cant be right? What are we talking odds wise here as ive had 3-4 massive crashes where if I wasn't wearing a helmet I wouldn't have gotten back up...

Or are you talking bicycles as a whole here as that cant be right for just MTB off road?

bicycling as a whole.

obviously based on the fact you spend more time walking than cycling, if you did both equally then statistically cycling would be more dangerous I'd imagine.

but anyway you don't see people wearing a helmet for a trip down the street or drunks being encouraged to wear a helmets because the chance of an accident must be at the least 50/50 your going to bang your nogging on the way home.

If someone doesn't want to wear a helmet then it should be their choice.

isn't there some famous british cyclist that doesn't wear a helmet? was it boardman?

If I did MTB/downhill then I'd wear a helmet but I'd imagine most managed trails make it mandatory anyway?

Trails aren't mandatory (well, not the ones I've been on anyway). People are frowned upon by the MTB'ers if they are spotted without a lid though.

Rubbish to not need one in any situation. I'd wear one going to the shop around the corner. You could be the safest, most vigilant cyclist known to man, doesn't stop someone not seeing you and knocking you down.

There is actually very little evidence to support the use of a helmet (and some evidence to suggest that it increases risks) so the seatbelt comparison is entirely invalid. This is one of those "it's common sense" arguments people come out with when in actual fact it's not "common sense" it's a presumption that studies have not supported.

i appreciate there comes a point where a helmet isnt going to save you but for minor to medium impacts i dont see how they could do anything but improve your chances of NOT getting a life changing brain injury.

if seems that the anti attitude to helmets is extremely similar to the attitude to the anti seatbelt attitude. the old "oh it'll never happen to me", "oh but some people have had more injuries because of it" etc.

As I mentioned earlier, I wear a helmet. I also judge people a little when I see them riding without one.

That said, there's virtually no evidence to support the benefits of riding with a helmet and some evidence that suggests that there are increased risks. Take some of the stuff posted here for example.

This whole helmet or no helmet argument falls flat on it's face when you read Phil W's post below.

This happens all the time, Should Phil W's mate not have worn a helmet then?

What about this guy?

What about when skiing should I give up there as well?

that's a VERY extreme case, I can give you 10 more articles where people have hit their heads without helmets and survived :)

the above article sums up my views completely ! don't get me wrong, I now wear a helmet but the amount of crap I got when I wasn't..

people stopping in street telling me to "put my thinking hat on" etc? cmon! IMO learning to ride is a bike is way more important than wearing a helmet.

Give me 10 articles where someone crashed their bike without a helmet on and got back up for a cup of tea then please..
