Having got my gaming laptop recently (specs in sig) ive been very tempted to get into vr on pc.
The games and the tracking over psvr is the main reason.

But looking into it the rift is 400 and the vive is 500.
Ive seen people say rift is better....then next thing i see is the vive is better lol

Ill be placing my laptop on the tv unit and have got a decent amount of floor space if needed

Rift : slightly better image quality due to higher res / lesser screendoor
Vive: leagues better tracking, especially in room scaled games ie walking around.

Other than that they both accomplish the same thing. A new level of immersion. As above, i would see if i could try both first.

I've owned two Rift headsets, a Samsung Odyssey, and I've demoed the Vive. The Rift is the best bang for your buck overall.

Pros:
  • Cheaper
  • Easier setup
  • Integrated headphones as standard
  • More comfortable and lightweight
  • Natively supports titles from the Oculus Store and SteamVR
  • Oculus Touch controllers are superior to the Vive wands
Cons:
  • Facebook
  • Requires 3 sensors for decent room scale
  • Requires more USB 3.0 ports
  • Shorter cables
  • Slightly inferior tracking

What do you mean by Facebook? Do you have to log into Facebook or something to use it? That would be a deal braked for me, never have used Facebook and never will. I assume though you mean Facebook make the hardware so they get your business, which I could live with if it is the best VR set.

I am still waiting for next gen higher resolution headset with no screen door effect, plus a killer app before I buy one with the intention to keep. All these years and still no killer app as far as I am concerned.

Also they should make a wireless one for their next one if they want it to sell better.

Have you looked into the pimax? more expensive but runs off the Vive lighthouses so tracking should be good.

The Vive has a wireless adaptor but its pricey.

Optically the Rift and Vive are pretty similar. Rift has better controllers and the Vive has better tracking out of the box.

The Vive should be getting upgraded controllers at some point and you can add more sensors for the Rift for better tracking.

Vives new pro version has better resolution and less screen door effect but its expensive.

Your laptop will run VR fine but a 1070 will struggle to run 2x super sampling in high end titles, it's not a massive thing but does make the image a little sharper.

If you just want to get into VR for as cheap as possible then a second hand Rift can be picked up for cheap.

I went for a Vive, its more expensive but I like the upgrade options and better room tracking from the box.

Con is Facebook? It’s not intrusive, and funds some of the best VR titles on the market, without facebooks money VR would never take off

Also 360 tracking is more than doable with 2 sensors for 2.5mx2.5m play area, which is more than fine for any VR title

Using a laptop makes things a little trickier if you were looking at the Rift due to it needing USB 3 ports for the sensors, for this reason alone I properly would be looking at the Vive or a WMR headset.

Don’t rule out the WMR headset, they can had for about £200 and don’t need external sensors for tracking due to them being ‘inside out tracking’
A great way to get into PCVR, can play all SteamVR titles, even if the game isn’t even listed as supported in steam.
Fanstastic piece of kit for the price, perfect for a laptop imo

Head on other to the VR tread, you will get much more help from VR enthusiasts

They own rift :)

As a glasses wearer I struggled with the Rift as it was pushing my glasses into my face no matter how I adjusted it.

My suggestion is to try the both if possible before making a decision as there are pros and cons with both.

I can agree, but also disagree with this. kind of.

Rift was doing absolutely fine without FB and would have continued to do so the owner just saw the word billions and then started day dreaming of private islands. There cash injection will certainly add more into R&D and will push the tech faster but i have no doubt that with all the small firms who do this R&D themselves like primax that we would get there with or without facebook. Also when we have players like sony in the game id say there is a whole more chance of them pushing it forward to the masses than facebook as i dont think your average facebook user is willing to spend the same amount on a headset as they would on a console.

This is true, but i don't think it's fair as the rift doesn't come with 2 senesors. The vive is subjectively better at tracking in room scale (3.5x3.5) that isn't necessarily needed that size but the tracking capabilities are there. Just wish they would team up for two reasons.

rift headset:vive trackers:steam knuckles controller:vives wireless (unless rift now has something)

Also CROSS COMPAT THE GAMES ALREADY there is absolutely no reason to be making headset exclusive AAA games. It feels like they are trying to start a X vs X like the consoles are ps vs xbox

Not sure if you know this but you can get prescription lens inserts for the vive so you don't need to wear your glasses as they act as glasses for you. I would imagine that there is a version of these for the rift, but i don't know:D

- Fellow blind person.

Yes, I did find somewhere that did them, but I was looking at a couple of hundred pounds for them. I ended up returning the Rift and getting a psvr instead.
