Rift or Vive!?

Ok after a lot of back and forth I'm going for the Vive.

The tracking boxes only needing a power socket is a big plus for me as I want 2 in front near TV unit and a 3rd on the rear wall behind....and wiring up the rift cams with extension leads makes my missus a killer lol
Also future upgrade options and rechargeable controllers are nice.

Now I can order one now through VERY.CO.UK with £40 off....so paying £460
Or I could wait for Black Friday but any chance they being much cheaper deals!?

Worth buying now or waiting for Black Fri?

Thanks all

The best deal on OC was lumping in the Deluxe strap for free at 500. I think that might have been BF last year, I can't recall.

I think the lowest you'd possibly see the Vive is 450, a very loose possible though. £460 sounds good.

Yeah I was thinking the £460 is pretty good. The deluxe strap would be nice but not essential as I'll use vr less than avid players I'd imagine

I can agree, but also disagree with this. kind of.

Rift was doing absolutely fine without FB and would have continued to do so the owner just saw the word billions and then started day dreaming of private islands. There cash injection will certainly add more into R&D and will push the tech faster but i have no doubt that with all the small firms who do this R&D themselves like primax that we would get there with or without facebook. Also when we have players like sony in the game id say there is a whole more chance of them pushing it forward to the masses than facebook as i dont think your average facebook user is willing to spend the same amount on a headset as they would on a console.

This is true, but i don't think it's fair as the rift doesn't come with 2 senesors. The vive is subjectively better at tracking in room scale (3.5x3.5) that isn't necessarily needed that size but the tracking capabilities are there. Just wish they would team up for two reasons.

rift headset:vive trackers:steam knuckles controller:vives wireless (unless rift now has something)

Also CROSS COMPAT THE GAMES ALREADY there is absolutely no reason to be making headset exclusive AAA games. It feels like they are trying to start a X vs X like the consoles are ps vs xbox
Oculus funded some of the best VR titles mate, this wouldn’t have happened without facebooks money, they then released the Oculus Go and are releasing the Oculus Quest next year, what they do next is anybody’s guess, personally I hope they concentrate on getting Oculus Studio’s back together, those short videos where brilliant, Henry wows everybody I have showed it to, we need more of that, and longer too. also an official wireless Rift adapter is a must, Sony could be THE main VR player in the future, but it needs to have considerably better gear for the PSVR2, not PS3 sex toys like controllers and the god awful tracking it has, another PS3 peripheral I believe?
The Rift comes with two sensors, it used to get bundled with an Xbox pad and 1 sensor, that all changed with the release of Robo Recall and touch controllers.
Cross play is a thing, and so it should be, but I would very much like Oculus to open there store to other HMD users, but that’s not going to happen unless Oculus and Valve can agree on which too use, OpenVR or OpenComposite or something else, or at the very Oculus least officially endorse Revive, or even take it over, VR is a PC peripheral, not a platform.

It’s a tough desicion between Oculus Rift, WMR and HTC Vive, they all have there pros and cons, and I have been lucky enough to have used them all, for the OP I would have gone with a WMR personally, could be had for less than half the price of the Vive and he has already said he doesn't thing he’s going to use it too much.
The big thing the Vive has on the others are the addons you can get, the wireless attachment, Knuckle controllers, Vive Pro and Pimax 5k and Pimax 8k too, but to get the very best out of the Vive you need deep pockets

Ok well ordered the Vive which should be here tomorrow and a mate (lives 200 ish miles away) has sent me a 3rd light box/plug/bracket and a spare vive controller he doesnt have time for anymore....for FREE!

Will set up later in the week if not weekend and get some games downloaded!!

Rec Room and The Lab are great free games to get your started

Rec room is brill! Constantly being updated and laser tag is addictive.

Alien Isolation, Elite dangerous, dirt rally are all amazing in VR.

Also get Accounting for a good laugh, its free too.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I have a similar question and wasn't even aware of the WMR until now, but looking at the price it's tempting

Other than the external tracking, (which could be seen as a negative depending on how much space you have/want to dedicate to it) what advantages does the rift have over WMR - specifically the Acer Ah101 which is going for £200 right now, vs the £360 for the newest rift (marvel heroes pack). The acer appears to have higher resolution, but the rift is OLED vs tft in the acer?

The lack of USB requirement is also a big plus for me as that's something I'm lacking a bit, would the rift work with a USB 3.0 hub?

Would be mostly used for Elite dangerous, but obviously the more other games which could be played the better.

Tracking aside, what visual quality differences would I be likely to notice in the acer vs rift? I guess blacks aren't going to be as good on TFT vs oled, which I guess is kind of important in a space sim!

My only experience of VR so far is some dodgy thing in the 80s, and a gear VR with a galaxy S7 Edge

Good evening, for more detailed information I suggest posting in the VR section, but I’ll answer as best as I can here.
• Other than the Rifts tracking being better than a WMR headset, the other main advantages are the Rift has in built audio and a mic, the WMR headsets other than the Samsung Odessey, dont, also the Rift controllers are currently the best on the market. Also Oculus fund there games, which are amongst the best in VR, also Oculus interface is excellent, much better than SteamVR, imo.
• I haven’t used a USB hub for the Rift, I don’t think a hub works, most Rift owners with usb issues, myself included, buy a Inatech 4 port PCIE adapter, that cures all USB bandwidth issues, but that’s another £20 for the adapter and then the cost of the USB extenders, but the Rift is very picky about those too.
• the WMR headsets are a higher resolution than the Rift, it doesn’t make too much difference to be honest, though text is slightly clearer on the Lenovo Explore I tried.
• I highly recommend a WMR headset to anyone body wanted to play PCVR, there are draw backs to every PCVR headset right now, none are perfect, all are slightly different yet all do the same thing.
• PCVR is streets ahead of the gear VR mate
