Rift Poor Sensor Tracking Quality

Hey all,

I took delivery of the Rift today! Super excited! However, I’m struggling at the first hurdle :p

I went through the setup, but I keep getting the “Poor tracking Quality” on both sensors. I’ve tried the headset and two sensors on all different combinations of USB but still get the same thing. The only other USB devices I have are the keyboard and mouse - and I’ve even tried without them plugged in.

I’ve gone past the window a few times and got to the VR setup, pointed at the spheres and then got teleported into the room with the robot. Managed to hang in that room for a couple of minutes before the Tracking went haywire and I couldn’t continue any further.

I’ve tried updating drivers and BIOS. I’ve also tinkered with the power settings to no avail.

Bit gutting since when it worked perfectly I was absolutely blown away!!

I’ve got a few things I still need to try, but thought I’d post to see if anyone has any tips.

My motherboard is an ASUS Z170-A (Also, as I side note - It has a USB3.1 port which, after a drive update, has now completely stopped working :( Not going well is it? Haha)

Thanks,

Marky

Sorry to hear you are having problems!! Did you say it was working at one stage and then stopped working and hasn't worked since?

Wonder did a windows driver update mess things up?

I am just off out, so haven't time to help right now.

Just a quick question, are you using windows 10?

Are you using XMP in the bios? (XMP has been known to cause USB issues on that motherboard)

things to try

Update the bios. see if that works.
Make sure you download the updated drivers for USB for the Oculus rift from Asus.

It worked for about 2 minutes into the robot demo - and then it all went sour - Since then I’ve not had it work properly.

I’m on Windows 10 and I have updated the BIOS. Strangely enough - I have heard of the problem with the XMP being enabled - I’ve tried twice to turn XMP to Auto but every time I save it doesn’t save it properly :/ Something fishy is happening I think - I do wonder if it has something to do with it...

I also tried download the beta drivers from Asus for the motherboard but trying to open the Setup file doesn’t do anything...

Are you in a room with lots of windows/mirrors in line of sight of the sensors?

One side of the room is basically a full wardrobe of mirrors - Could that be affecting it?

Edit: I should say that the error I’m getting is when you setup the sensors - The test is telling me there is unnecessary lag between the sensor and the computer rather than it being a problem of seeing the environment.

That's odd, there is definitely something fishy going on there with the motherboard. I agree with you there.

The problem with XMP and the USB ports even affects add-in cards. I remember this because it was a board I was looking at when thinking of upgrading my computer for the Rift. I didn't buy it because loads of people seemed to have issues with it and Rift. It's not a problem with the Rift itself, it just uses a lot of USB bandwidth and that highlights the problem.

Are you overclocking at all? Maybe you should reset the bios to defaults and see what happens?

I’ve also reset the BIOS to defaults :p

However, when I do it tells me what changes are going to be made - one of which is turning XMP to Auto but when I exit and save I load up the BIOS again and XMP is back on the previous setting...

Not sure why it isn’t saving the settings :(

The rift is quite fussy on USB bandwidth, there is a setup guide on the oculus subreddit that has a powershell script that disables power management etc. Sometimes it can work better if you unplug other USB devices, apparently the included xbox 1 wireless adaptor can cause issues.

Try to avoid having the sensors on a hub.

Thanks for that - Got a few things to try when I'm back home! If I have no luck tonight, I think I'm going to get the USB PCI card that everyone is recommending - To be fair, if I have the rift/sensors plugged in, I'm strapped for sockets anyway :p

Tell me about it! Up until my rift arrived on Wednesday I had no USB3 devices, I've ordered that card, a 3rd sensor, all sorts of brackets and USB extension cables, most of which turn up today!

I've barely put the thing down since owning it. All extra furniture has been evicted from the lounge.

Hahaha :D I can sense this is the way I'm going to be heading - As I said, I've only had it working perfectly for 2 or 3 minutes, but I was completely blown away! Really hope I can get it working tonight so I can try some proper games - I'm already considering moving some furniture around in another room :p :D

I hope the card solves your problem. I am not sure it will though. Fingers crossed :)

I'm going to have another look at my motherboard tonight - I'm hoping there's a reset button or something on it that will reset it to default settings properly. Fingers Crossed! I'll keep you posted :p

The mirrors can cause havoc I would guess. Windows alone can cause problems as can any reflective surface (including chair legs in my case!).

That aside, Are you using the 3.5mm cable between the lighthouses? I've used both USB 2/3 ports on my mobo and it's been fine (and no difference between them).

Good Luck!

You are talking about the Vive :) He has a Rift. The rift doesn't suffer from reflections as badly as the Vive does.

i will need a card if i go for the 3rd sensor, at the moment im fine. My kb uses 2 usb ports.

inateck 4 ports pci-e to usb 3.0 This card is what you need if you decide to go for a card.

But, the third sensor will work with a USB 2.0 port. So if you have any spare USB ports at all, USB 3 or 2 it will probably work.

Well... I think I've tried everything and still not tracking properly :(

Think I've gotta take the hit and order the USB PCI-e card :( No Rifting for me this weekend

Just curious, what version of the Oculus software are you running? If you go into settings and then general, scroll to the bottom of the screen, it should be oculus app 1.16.

Will you try a couple more things before giving up?

Remove the oculus software and reinstall it. Then do the following.

First download oculus tray tool from here

https://www.dropbox.com/s/k3srn92fzf3utbs/OculusTrayTool_0.69.2.zip?dl=0

Unzip it and run the app using admin rights. When the app starts, click the boxes that say start with windows, start minimized and use Audio Switcher. Then in power options check to make sure your current power plan is high performance. Also in the USB selective suspend, set that to disabled. Ignore everything else for the moment. You can close the app if you want now. If the PC isn't set to high performance, set it to that now, just for troubleshooting purposes.

Now reboot the pc and go into your bios. I don't know what memory speed you have but try to disable XMP and set your ram speed to a lower speed, try 2666mhz.

When your pc boots backup try the rift and see what happens.
