Rig Build Help: Been Away Some Time!

OK guys –first post – but been a ‘lurker’ for some time. I just really wanted some honest advice about a new PC I’m looking to build but its been that long since I built my last one, I’ve sort of been out of the loop technology wise!

I have around £1000 to spend on a decent gaming rig which I also want to ‘moderately’ future proof. Ideally, I want to buy the main parts now, get it all setup and perhaps add to it as and when I have some more money (i.e. the ‘nice to haves’ like additional RAM, Bluray drive etc.)

It’s my intention to be playing Battlefield 3 on my new machine as well as going down the ATI Eyefinity route for my Sim racing on iRacing, rFactor etc. (I use Dell WFP2408’s at the moment) I’m also a heavy Photoshop and Lightroom user for my photography business so the requirement for a bit of RAM always helps those apps fly a bit better.

I’d also be interested to know if I can use my existing case – just worried about the size of some of these Noctua type coolers fitting in there with RAM also.

My current PC that I’m upgrading from is spec’d as follows:

Antec 900 case (wondering if I can re-use this in my next build or should I update?)
Asus P5W DH Deluxe
Intel C2D E6600
Arctic Freezer Pro 7
2GB DDR2 RAM (PC2-6400/400MHz)
XFX Radeon HD 5770
SB X-Fi Sound card
WD 500GB SATA 7200RPM Hard drive partitioned for OS drive and Storage Drive
PSU I’m not sure but around 500W I think...

I really do want to get a decent gaming rig with plenty of future ability and it’s my intention to try and retain the case and the current Hard Drive to use a storage only drive. Therefore I’m looking at something like:

Intel Core i7 2600k 3.4GHz Socket 1155
Noctua NH-D14 CPU Cooler
Suitable Motherboard (really not sure which to go for as so many!)
12GB Corsair Vengeance 12GB (3x4GB) DDR3 1600Mhz Memory Kit CL9 1.5V Non-ECC Unbuffered
OCZ 850W ZX PSU
Seagate 1TB 3.5" SATA-III Constellation Hard Drive - 7200RPM 64MB Cache
PowerColor Radeon HD 6970

Obviously I’m looking for advice on what you think I may have missed or need to be looking at as well – perhaps a new DVD-RW drive or something? Was just going to use my old one for now... Perhaps you think I’m overkill on the spec and I can get some different RAM or slower processor that has unnoticeable difference for less money. Obviously I’d like to save any money where I can and re-invest that into something else or just bring the cost of the rig down slightly.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated and I’ll try respond where I can to get a solid spec list together with the help of you guys. Cheers!

Hello and welcome to the forum :)

You can still re-use your case, but you need to check the measurement between the pci slots and hard drive bays as the gpu may be to long.

You have chosen triple channel memory ideally you need dual channel.

Drop the cpu to the 2500k, 2600k offers very little for gaming.

Cheers for that fella!

I'm just about to start measuring up the case now to see what I've got to play with and will then report back... the spec sounds good though - thanks for correcting me on the emory front and the info in regard to the i7 - as you say, perhaps not worth the premium over the i5-2500k!

No probs :)

The i7 would be handy of did a lot of video and graphic work, other wise save the cash and get a SSD instead!

Yeah I don't do much video work to be honest and my photography is all about RAW files - storage and quick access - I don't usually work with multiple files or programs at any one time.

I would have gone i7 if I was getting back into recording though along with a decent sound card, as I like to run a few programs wired up (Reason into ProTools etc.) but I've got a dedicated Mac for that job now!

Would the SSD be used for the OS and progs / games mostly? Or just the OS only?

I use the SSD for Windows and most used programs, I tend to put games on a normal Hard Disc, but its up to the user really.

there's enough in the budget from rjc's spec to upgrade the ssd to 128gb

also if you are a gambling man/woman(sorry don't mean to be rude but no idea here ;) ) I would say go for this can be unlocked to 6970 by the flick of a switch and save youself ~£40, the performance is within a fps here or there compared to a 'true' 6970.

yes the unlock isn't guranteed but its the only 6950 now that you can get new that has a chance to be unlocked, I myself took the gamble with 2 and thus far have fitted 1 which has unlocked(not had a chance to try the other since I recieved my order last thursday).

or you could save a bit more and go with this or this these wouldn't unlock but you can oc them to 580 level performance, the flex is even good for your eyefinity setup(sure stulid or someone else will be able to fill you in).

you can then put the saving from the graphics card towards extra ram if so desired, may not be needed in games but might help with your photo work(I'm no expert here)

Cheers mate - especially useful on the graphics card front! Didn't realise about the potential for these to unlock - interesting about that switch and the extra money saved can go towards something else as you say!

May need to invest in a newer case over my Antec 900 - not convinced there is going to be enough space... I'll post measurements up later and see if anyone can give some advice...

might be worth a look at the the Antec Kúhler H2O 620 cooler.

if its the antec 900 (not 900-2) from the antec website:

Maximum video card size:
16"/406mm (Note: some video cards may require removal of the adjacent hard drive cage)

Yep it's the original 900, not the revised version. I've had a look and most suggest card size of about 11" for the 6970s?

I may have to have a good check of the HDD cage area and ensure I've room for the drives as well... it may ell be worth me just getting an updated case and selling this one on for a few bob...

I really like the look of the Cooler Master HAF X and seems to get a good writeup a lot of the time. Would also give me better cable routing and SATA docks / USB SS ports on the case itself. Overall a step up from what I have at the minute.

OK guys so I'm a little confused right now - I'm getting a lot of mixed opinions elsewhere in the world and wonder if anyone can provide links to some light reading or give an explanation?

People are telling me to get a 1366 board an i7 chip for that rather than a SandyBridge but I can't work out what the differences are, other than the 1366 seem to have triple channel memory whereas the new SB chip boards are al dual channel. What is the difference in these i7 chips?

So many different things - X58, Z68, P67 etc.

Any light reading appreciated!

the 1366 socket board and i7 chip is the old intel socket/mobo.

sandybridge is the new intel processor (1155 socket), the i5 2500K is the preferred chip for gaming, the i7 2600K is more used for video editing etc.

with the new sandybridge the "K" series processors are the only ones that are overclockable on the z68 & p67 motherboards.

so the 2500K will overclock, the plain 2500 will not.

Thanks guys - very useful reading - think I'm set on the i5 2500k now!

My current PSU is an Antec 650W supply in the Antec 900 (v1) case... do you reckon it's worth upping this if I'm looking at a high end GFX card from nVidia / ATI?

To be honest I'm tempted by getting a bigger, more modern case and a new PSU. Any case recommendations? I said the HAF X but there may be others?

how about the Corsair Obsidian 650D case ?

that psu should be ok unless you plan to crossfire/sli the top end cards.

whats the model of the psu(you say its an antec but do you have a more prescise model?)? is it modular?

ak!ta looks like ocuk have decided its time to pop the tranquillo back up to normal price but have still left it as 'this week only', so does that mean it'll be more expensive than before it went on the 'this week only' offer?

Cracking - I think I may stick with my existing HDD for the storage element and save a little there but that makes the offset on the SSD cheaper!

Toxic 6950 also sounds good as mentioned earlier and it could potentially give me 6970 performance for less notes... I notice in the review it talks about setting the PowerTune to +20% - is this something people recommend doing regardless?

Hopefully going to put an order in today or tomorrow and get the first few bits of my build. The intention is to order what I can now and then some more after payday ;) Will post up a spec later today for final checks!

EDIT: Just re-read the review and notice the BIOS update that fixes the Powertune +20% thing... what do people reckon the chances are of getting a card that can be unlocked? You'd have to get an early card surely so maybe not a chance now if the OC stock is fairly new?
