Hi all I am wanting to upgrade my current rig for Christmas I am looking for the following components.
CPU
Mobo
Memory
Video card (DX 10)

I have £1,700 to spend and I want the PC for gaming, I want to run crysis maxed out and on DX 10.

Here is one I made earlier.

Intel Core 2 Quad Extreme QX6850, Socket 775, 3.00 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB, 8MB Cache

XFX MB-N680-ISH NF680i SLI, S 775, PCI-E (x16), DDR2 533/667/800, SATA II, SATA RAID, ATX

4GB (4x1GB)Corsair DDR2 8500, 4x128Mx64, non-ECC, 2x240 DIMM, unbuffered, 5-5-5-15, E.P.P.Technology

Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate Retail (DVD) 32Bit & 64Bit

768MB BFG Technology 8800GTX OC PCI-E(x16) Mem 1800MHz GPU 600MHz 128 Stream HDTV/2 x DVI-I

I have probably gone over the top but I want this to last a good three years at least.

Anyway I will leave it to you guys, the only thing I was unsure about was if I should go to DDR3 or stay with DDR2?

Thanks Adam

maybe a q6600 g0 and overclock it insted of the qx6850

stay with ddr2 last time i checked ddr3 still is over priced and have high latency

its unlikely anybody will be able to run crysis 'maxed out' its one of them games that will bring the best of computers down

q6600 G0
thermal right ultra extreme
4gb ballistix
OCUK OEM 8800GTX
corsair 620W
Abit IP-35 Pro

You absolutely can't go wrong with above.

Its tried and tested stuff tbh.

No such rig exists yet that can max crysis not even sli 8800 gtx ultra will, depends which resolution though i suppose.

yeh stick with ddr2 and hounestly for my oppinion dont bye a hybrid bored either stick with a ddr2 only bored as by the time you buy ddr3 your bored that kept you future proof wont support the top speed ddr3 and if you want that your naffed and need a new bored anyway, besides 2 slots seems limiting concidering people like 4gb these days to keep comfortable.

That will probably run Crysis moderatly well but it still remains that Full DX10 SP mode has not been benched, wait untill the new quads are out and the GTX price drops near christmas, would you rather rush into buying a system now that will run crysis on a lower resolution or wait untill better faster hardware is out that will increase performance on it as well as many other games, can hardly justify £1700 on a 1 game rig.

I have just purchased this little beauty ready to play crysis on!

Hate to be pedantic, but it's "board", not "bored"

I would have gone with a gigabite board and i no you said you didnt want a HDD but i would recomend getting a WD Raptor for load speeds.

Antec p182 or Akasa eclispe

dont really like those, am thinking of the lian-li pc7 seIII (competitor and out of stock) or the pc7 plus 2 from here...

edit: actually if the akasa fits under my desk, might have a look at it..

Thanks for all your replies I do appreciate it, I think I will wait till we get a little closer to Christmas or wait till after Christmas and see what’s out then.
Thanks again bullet-time

Right well after all your comments i have decided on a spec, i may leave it a bit but cash flow is tight up to Christmas so i will see.

So what do you guys think? I dont want to over clock as i have never done it before but but if it will save me a few £ i give it ago.

Thanks bullet-time

If you are going to get 4GB of RAM don't bother getting a 32bit edition of Vista, it will only recognise about 3gb of it, maybe less.

I'd ditch the 680i idea and get an X38 mainboard as it will clock that quad better with the added bonus of PCIe 2.0.
Overclockers at last have the Asus P5E X38 board in stock now which i totally recommend. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-249-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=946

Also Wij is right, get 64 bit home premium oem if you want to run 4gb, save yourself some cash no need for ultimate imo. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SW-037-MS

I'd also drop the raptor in favour of a couple of 7200 rpm drives instead.
By the time you've got your OS on, a bit of music and some games you'll soon be running out of room on that 150gb drive.

Maybe a couple of the western digi's AAKS 500gb's and raid them up? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-120-WD&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=940
