Rig for WoW Cata?

wow is more HDD hungry than anything, a nice fast drive for it to sit on will improve lagg in citys

any my rig in my sig runs it max settings (no shadow detail) at a constant 47fps, max of 55 minimum ive seen of 36fps

more than playable.

Well thats not really maxing then tbh if you can have absolutly everything maxed including shadows and run at a steady 60fps with vsync yes then your good 47 isnt that great.

I would have thought that your Q6600 would bottleneck the 460 even if its overclocked at 3.4 so you will not be able to play WoW Cata maxed out.

So to answer your question I think you should get a i5/i7 or wait for sandy bridge.

I got an i3 dual core @ 4.0GHz and a GTX 460 1024MB @ 800/1600/2000.

Doubt you would need anything more powerful than that to run Cata @ 1080p, 60fps.

How well does it run for you in dala? and at what resolution? Everything Maxed? No lag spikes at all ever?

With rig in sig, I get 100-150 fps in random zones, 40-60 in Dalaran, 70+ in raids. Lowest I've seen is about 35fps while standing in the middle of 60 or so whelps all being aoe'd in a raid :) This is with everything maxed, max AA etc. 1920x1080. Even with extra settings to give more grass/flowers/bells/whistles.

As wow only uses two cores maximum, an i3 theoretically will have same performance as an i7, therefore your numbers shouldnt vary too much. WoW is more CPU bound than GPU. The minimums will be lower though with a 460 I'd imagine.

On my older Q6600 @ 3.6Ghz and a HD4870 512mb I was maxing out WotLK at 1680x1050. I didnt have my 24" monitor back then so couldnt test 1080. When I used to raid ICC in 25mans I wouldnt see any lag at all. Daralan loading lag would annoy me every now and then, but that was more HDD then anything else.

My friend is buying my old kit off me and probably a 460 with it and is expecting to max out at 1080. I see no reason why this is not possible.

But WoW Cata is DX11..

If you're 100% sure I can max it out with a 460 then i'll buy it :)

and whats the best SSD for the WoW Cata and as you can see I don't have Sata 3

Do you think that Blizzard expects all 12million subscribers to get a DX11 GFX and new system just for cata? They need to protect their numbers. Yes DX11 is a great new feature, but it will still work on a DX9 card.

This would do the job

Whilst a 460 will still max WoW I assume you do still play other games? Or will at soem point in the future? Thats why I recomend spending the 25 extra to get a 470 (a certain amount of "future proofing")

If I max everything with my sig I get about 40-60fps - and thats without any AA. Shadow detail above good devoures frames like nothing else. So unless your going SLI theres not much chance of decent fps.

Turn shadow detail to good though and its 120+ constant unless its really busy in cities.

Multi GPU gives zero gains in WoW, it's simply not designed with it in mind.
