• Competitor rules

Please remember that any mention of competitors, hinting at competitors or offering to provide details of competitors will result in an account suspension. The full rules can be found under the 'Terms and Rules' link in the bottom right corner of your screen. Just don't mention competitors in any way, shape or form and you'll be OK.

Right lets talk everyone - are we all just been psychologically tricked into "needing" new graphics cards?

For me 60fps isn't buttery smooth. It's acceptable, but far from great iq in motion.
I just don't get how enthusiasts can be so impressed by a slightly better shadow at 4k when the image is still but not see the total loss of clarity with anything over a few inches per second motion. I even see enthusiasts today saying 90fps is perfect for gaming with anything higher being for bragging rights, then in a different thread saying they wouldn't touch 165hz any more because 240hz is so much better for windows.
I don't like that we need such high frames to reach motion clarity that I had back in crt days, and is why I am really interested in the crt emulation shader etc would be great to not need 1000fps hahaha my friend pulled out his crt the other day and we put Alan Wake 2 on at 120hz and it was much much clearer than the 240hz screen next to it. It was also running at low res but still looked good, like free dlss :D I wonder if Nvidia could look into crt emulation over fg.

not everyone of course but a fair chunk i would imagine just want to keep up with the Jonses and want the things that have an interest around them currently.
Almost like a jealousey that others have something newer or better than them and they want in on it.

nah my nearly four year old 6700xt is starting to feel very stretched at 1440p in multiplayer games I would like a consistent 165fps in an ideal world anything below 100 is mehh when playing

think a new GPU will tide me over until I can decide on the rest of the system

I would say these days, a 60hz monitor (and by extension, aiming for or being limited to 60fps) is a pretty low bar for gamers. The difference between 60 and 144+fps is definitely noticeable, and it's a lot harder to hit 144+fps when maxing everything out.

This really comes down to personal preferences.

If you are happy with the performance of your system then you really don't need to upgrade.

For me I like to target my monitor refresh rate but happy for it to not always hit that target so for me anything above 100fps.

I am also happy to drop some settings but I do not want to play on a game that is much worst quality than a console.
So I target ultra/high.

What I have also learnt over the years is that CPU upgrade is much more beneficial than the GPU.
I have recently just experienced this going from i7 8700k to 7800x3D my GPU gained extra performance now hit 100% load in all games.
I could have easy put the blame onto the GPU and upgraded the GPU brute forcing performance without really thinking about the real problem being the CPU.

There is no doubt that gamers are locked in to buying cycles. Habit and hype!!

It seems to be getting worse too. We are approaching limits where monitors are ten times faster than the human eye, resolutions and dynamic ranges higher, yet the obsession to buy seems to be getting worse.

I'm not saying I am free from this either! But recent price increases and performance figures are really starting to make me question everything.

A completely sensible, thoughtful, logical reply on OCUK, never thought I'd see the day  :D

Yeah, this, basically what my OP is about, people seem to be locked into apparently needing something, when playing a game maxed out smooth.......and this is just 1 game of course - all the other games in my steam library run maxed out as well, many at my monitors 144hz refresh too.

Also Freesync kind of removed the need to go over your monitors max ability - its a solid image, why stress.

I get it if you want 144hrz, 120hrz for competitive FPS, but the reduction in lag over 144 isn't much of a jump.

Also while I think about it, cyberpunk is often used to show off cards - how many on here have actually played it, all the way through, and invested hours in it? Truthfully? I've played it for about 2-3 hours, its ok, never got that into it, im sure its great, but is a game or even 3 games worth £2500 to 'buy in', or even £1599 if you got a 4090, because lets face it, if these games didn't exist, no one is buying a 5090 beyond someone doing professional work requiring such a gpu.

The only reason seems to be, 'its new shiny fast', and if that makes you sleep at night, then the marketing team got in your head.

I've completed it twice over, once as Male V and once as female V

Is it worth paying about £20 per hour to play this title, assuming you got a 5090? That's quite pricey!
why would i judge it like that? not like its worn out and useless after ive played 1 game on it :D i went from a 970 to a 3080 and then replaced that in 18 months with a 4090fe so i could get away from the vram struggles, i play a lot of games and yeah the price is high but if you keep it for at least 4 years skipping a gen its not terrible for that duration :P

I'm happy with 120hz native on my LG G2 OLED.

That would have been almost unthinkable before DLSS
running 4k 120hz oled 48i just great native with 6950xt
poe2 run great native 4k a whole new game without ray tracing.

People bought the nvidia marketing and cant think outside the box

It's definitely psychological manipulation (aka good marketing), but it feeds into our natural impulses for new shiny things.

Nah, I know my old Vega 56 wasn’t the dog’s danglies when I got and that’s 6-7 years ago.

£2500 worth of graphics card would be nice if anyone fancies donating theirs.

If you have another couple of grand spare, I can build a new system to put the new GPU as well.

What I have also learnt over the years is that CPU upgrade is much more beneficial than the GPU.

What you should have learnt is that using a 7/8 yr old 6 core CPU with a modern GPU is a bad idea! ;)

In reality, all things being equal, a GPU upgrade is still more beneficial than a CPU upgrade when it comes to gaming.

best bet is a x3d cpu for best gains :)
