Anyone fancy shedding some light on who was the right of way in this situation?

Both cars on the minor roads at the junction, the main road is a thoroughfare with the minor roads both marked as Give Way. The main road is clear and 2 cars are facing off, car to the North wants to turn right onto the main road. Car to the South wants to either go straight on over the main road and onto the other minor road or turn right onto the main road. Who has right of way?

I would have thought the one going straight on, as the person turning right would be crossing his path

edit: Pyscho_Si - ah beaten

Yeah, the car turning right should defer right of way as they're potentially crossing two lines of traffic (the main road they're joining and other cars going straight on like the on in question), whereas the driver going straight on can only cross one.

I do a junction like this every time I drive home. It's as well to consider how long the car turning right has been waiting, sometimes they get a bit jumpy! Sometimes they over-focus on the traffic coming from their left (the traffic they're joining) and don't look for traffic coming at them from straight on. Often I flash them and get them to go to get them out of the way.

This is an interesting one for me - I would have thought that the car turning right actually has right of way, since technically as soon as they complete their turn, they are then on the main road and so joining traffic would have to defer to them. Happy to be corrected though :)

I would say the top one as it is joining the flow of the traffic on to the main road. The car going straight across is then technically crossing the top cars path. Look at it this way if the car at the top was actually 100 metres further down the road and not directly in front/only slightly to the right of the bottom car, the bottom car would need to give way.

Could be totally wrong however.

normally when im in that situation the drivers communicate with each other, so there is no chance of crashing :P

The one crossing the least lines of traffic; but that changes if they weren't there first.

What about if both cars are turning right onto the main road (albeit in different direction of travel!).

It's more a general interest query, it's a junction on the way to the Tesco near me and quite often ends up in a Mexican stand off with lights flashing and arm waving. Does the situation change if there's a zebra crossing on one of the minor roads (one to the North, just behind my nice square car)?

Interesting to note the different opinions and apparent lack of a definitive answer (glad its not just me!)

Well, it's obvious really... the one in the biggest car... especially if it's a 4 x 4, clearly has right of way here! ;)

If both were turning right then they could both go and turn behind each other.
