Really tempted at the mo buy a mac book but is it the right time with rumors of Core 2 Duo based mac's as early as september.?

There's always something new around the corner - technically Merom (first gen core 2 duo mobile) isn't the 'real' one anyway, there'll be more revisions...and on and on :)

I'd buy one now unless there's no real rush and you don't want to swap the CPU later (I'll probably swap in a Merom at some point) :)

There won't be another major event until January now (Macworld Expo) so apart from the odd revision to some products I'd say there isn't many reasons, if any at all why you shouldn't buy one now.

Sure, Merom will be coming soon, as well as Blu Ray / HD-DVD but I wouldn't recommend waiting for them, once a small revision comes it won't be long until another will be round the corner.

Eh? I thought Core 2 Duo was Merom? I am hoping that they'll have them ready to announce at Paris! Surely they won't wait til January to phase out the Core Duo's when other PC manufacturers will be releasing them ASAP?

Thats exactly what I thought. Every other companys is going core 2 mad so why aren't apple??

Who knows but I did read that there won't be any presentation at paris by his stevieness so i doubt there will be a product launch, however, the likely hood of a event before january is high in prep for christmas, like last year when they released the new iPod's and there hasnt actually been a new product launch from apple at the consumer level for a while so I'd say October/November probly.

yeah, around early october you usually get the new batch of iPod's coming out for christmas ... it really isn't the time or event for hardware updates though.

If you haven't already jigman, buy, buy, buy :)

new ipod nanos and upgraded laptops / imacs for core2 are a popular rumour

no scheduled event but there could be a media event of some kind, also apple are havign n event befre photokino in germanyat the end of september, could be aperture updates, could be laptop upgrades. who knows

The chips are soldered to the mainboard though?

Well it will take me till next week to get all the cash anyway so i may just wait and see for a week or so

I'm just waiting till the 1st week of October.
I will be buying whatever the best specced MacBook Pro is at the time.

Set yourself a date and say "I'm buying whatever the best model is then".

If you're a student, now is a brilliant time to buy. Or at least that's what I've just done, placed an order for a macbook and total came under budget :D So pleased.

everyone knows it is 'never' a good time to buy with apple. its probably worth just deciding what you want from a machine. if the current ones are capable. and if so buy in confidence as you're getting what you want.

either way I can't imagine you will notice much difference between the current machine and the next models up... it was the jump from powerpc to intel that was the one to wait for, and now all the models are intel updates will be "smaller" for a while.

I was very tempted to wait for core 2 macbook pros to come out but i thought about it and the current ones can do what i want so I went for it and I'm very pleased. I would say just go for it, if it does what you need then why not

He was talking about a Macbook though, which are not socketed?
Hmm, I hadn't got that far. I know the chips are pin-compatible but haven't got any further :p

Edit:

Unlike many other Intel based Macs, the processor in the MacBook Pro is soldered to the logic board, rather than socketed
Ah well, more money for a nice 24" widescreen I guess :D

It seems the Core 2 Duo will just slip into Core Duo's place without any motherboard change. But to see the full benefits, there will be a new Core 2 Duo chipset early next year with faster FSB and whathaveyou. I guess that's what the chappie above meant when he said it's not the real thing.

The MacBook and MacBook Pro have the CPU soldered onto the mainboard. I'd wait a few weeks and get the Core2 Duo version.
