Is it just me that despises the term "rig" when used to describe a computer?

I don't understand where it's come from or why people use it so much.

It feels like it's used to make a PC seem greater than it is or something.

Does anyone find the term annoying? Or am I just moaning and being grumpy?

OP, I see where you're coming from. It's like the term "agg" in paintball circles. Everyone uses it because they think it sounds cool, but it's pretty embarrassing if you say it to anyone outside of those circles.

I confess, I will use "rig" if talking to another gamer. I know that if I said it to my gf I would lose all boob-touching priveledges

I have no idea what "agg" means, but the second part sounds right.

Except, I'd be disgusted with myself if I ever seriously used the term "rig". :p

That kind of thing? Oh, they'll come.

They. Will. Come.

That sounds about right.

It doesn't bother me, but in skydiving the term "rig" is for your entire parachute system. In yachting it's generally used for sails. I'd never use it for computers - but each to their own. :)

That sounds about right.

Agg is roughly synonymous with "cool", derivative from "aggressive", but mostly means fashionable and functionless. This sums it up

Anyway, I'm on my work rig now, so back to work

That sorta implies "rig" to me, cables, levers and what not. Same with a boat, cables, or rather ropes and pulleys for the sails.

I just don't see which bit of a computer makes up the "rig" part.

Realistically, it doesn't actually bother me (much ) I've just always been curious as for why people use it, where they picked it up, and what they think it's in reference to.

I'd always assumed the term came from 'Big-Rig', in other words a US Lorry. They typically have powerful engines designed to shift loads over long distances, they also have a culture of being quite fancy, especially when you compare them to the European equivalent. I also believe there is a culture of customising your Big-Rig and being quite proud of it, especially on the inside.

But yeah, it is pretty lame really. I suppose though, people just want to say something which sounds better than PC or Computer. Ultimately if you said Rig to somebody who isn't into that kind of thing, they wouldn't know what you were talking about.

A rig is just a collection of parts which create a functional device (or just a machine of sorts)

Such as...

Oil rig.
Transport rig. (lorry or transport ship)
Drilling rig.
Gaming rig.

Similar to jury rigging or nautical rigging it seems (both in a similar vein, an assortment of ropes, or a makeshift repair), so not that silly really.
