Ring or Netatmo Security Camera? Anyone got one?

Yes, that was my whole point. How to balance that kind of security along with the privacy of my kids when they are living at my house as young adults.

give them access to them so they can turn them off if they need privacy, etc.

or they just need to pull the plug on them. then plug back in once they have finished.

or you know do it in the bedroom where there shouldn't be any cameras.

Those Yi cameras seem pretty good for the price, £28 for 1080p camera is a bargain. Might pick one up to try and monitor the driveway from upstairs bedroom. Figure if its not quite right can use it indoors and buy an outdoor one which are £46 at the min.

Right! With the Prime sale, time to buy! Any suggestions then from the ones mentioned so far?

Note: We have a dog and two cats :) Have fairly lowspeed fibre: 28/4 down/up.

Logitech Circle 2
These are £100 wired / £130 wireless : I'd prbably buy two of these (wired). One to sit on the front on the garage to watch the drive, and one to put in our lounge to detect motion indoors when out.

Subscription@ $99 a year for 31 days storage and motion zones and person detection BUT THIS IS PER CAMERA! So you'd need the $179 per year option for 2 or more cameras!

Total: £200 + $179 a year <-- RIP OFF! JUST TAKING THE MICHAEL!!! :(

Q: Anyone got a battery powered version of one of these? Multi-person geofencing possible?

Netgear Arlo Pro 2
This would be £400 for a two camera version, but then it seems to be the best/platinum solution with loads of bells and whistles like the cameras know when people are home etc.

Subscription: Would need $2.99 x 2 for the 7 days cloud storage + smart detection features. $10 a month for 30 days of storage. You can have local storage (via a USB hard drive).

Total: £400 + $6-10 a month

Ring Security Camera
This is £139, and would just give me a camera over the garage with the benefit of a spot light being controlled too.

Would look to get a Ring/Amazon internal camera when they release one.

Subscription: £25 per year for one camera. £80 for multiple + professional monitor etc etc. Can be included into Rings alarm package too. 60 days storage. <-- BARGAIN!!!

Total: £139 + £25 a year.

Yi
I'd probably go with a single outdoor, and a single indoor one = £43.99 + £46.99

These have microSD slots you can use, but no geo fencing etc. Limited "person detection" is available.

Subscription: $9.99 for 15 days.

Total: £91 + $9.99 per month.

Right... I've gone with the Ring security light, being as Amazon have bought them out and I suspect loads more Ring/Amazon stuff to come on board.

Their subscription is also very cheap.

I would have liked to have bought two Logic Circle 2, but their subscription is a rip off.

I'll order some internal cameras at another point - Note: Yi 1080P 2's are not available at the moment...

Tempted to grab a Yi 1080p camera just for how cheap they are (£28). Would be recording onto an sd card so not too bothered about cloud storage, but anyone know if there's anyway to integrate it for use with Google Home/Chromecast? Would be cool to be able to look at feed on my TV or control via voice.

I don't think the ones on Amazon are the second gen ones? Also, without cloud storage I'm not sure you can examine your footage remotely? Maybe someone can clear that point up?

No the 1080p are the first gen. But other than a couple of features the first gen seem to be more flexible with regards for mounting. Have to check on the footage playback and whether it can be done without the cloud. Might get one as a test and if its not quite upto scratch will use it as an indoor camera and get a Ring or something for outdoors.

If you can view the Yi's footage remotely, thus meaning no subscription is required at all, that's interesting!

If the Logi Circle 2 cameras subscription wasn't such a total rip off I'd be interested in getting those - But alas!

I'd like to see how good the Ring Stick Up Cam Elites are too. There were annouced 6 months ago, but still no sign of them! Can only assume the Amazon buy out of Ring has caused a hiccup? I'd be interested in getting a couple of these both in and around the house, especially if they fit in nicely with the Ring outdoor security camera.

hopefully i can clear up matters. first of all I don't have the cloud service but I will be getting it within the next week or so.

i have 5 cameras and just ordered my 6th today. i will be selling one of the 720p ones as i bought a 1080p to upgrade it to and i believe you can only have 5 on the cloud service. however i may keep it just to get another angle if you are allowed more or just to use as an sd only camera or even just as a baby monitor or alert camera..

i only actually currently have 3 set up. 2 indoors for alerts - if someone enters my kitchen or living room. i get an alert and a 10 second clip sent to me. so this is set up on a timer for when i'm at work or sleeping. if anyone enters those rooms whilst i'm at work or asleep i get a 10 second recording sent to me. it's good and bad as sometimes 10 seconds isn't enough so that is why cloud is a lot better. however it alerts you which is good.

the third is in bedroom looking out on driveway at our cars and the road. this has an sd card which records motion only.

i use the phone app - android. to do anything i want with it. update firmware. settings. look at recordings.

so it may be possible to get the phone app on chromecast, or an android smart tv and use that to connect to the camera and then look at previous recordings. however there is zero chance of voice control.

i can connect to the camera from anywhere in the world and see them live. they also have a mic and a speaker so you can speak to them / use them as a baby monitor, etc.

my mate at work bought one and stuck it in his parents house so he can keep an eye on them as they are both getting on. he showed us them during the day at 1pm and both were sleeping in the living room. so he decided to say hello to wake them up was pretty funny.

i'm going to get sd cards for them all, i have no idea how big you would need tbh for internal ones probably 16GB is enough. looking out of windows then 64GB minimum most likely as every time a pigeon or car goes past it will record it.

as i said before i had an incident on sunday at 7am and my 720p facing out the window recorded it all. if you want to see the quality of an indoor camera pointed out of a window and how good it is send me a trust and i can send you the link to watch it. remember it was 720p model so 1080p will be a lot better but it looks very good even at 720p however IMO best spending the extra for 1080p if using for looking out of windows.

you can copy the files to your phone from the camera using the app however you need to be at home on the same network with a strong signal otherwise the bit rate gets crippled and the video becomes useless. i really should take the sd card out of the camera and into the pc and get the raw file but i have no idea where my sd adapter is. i may try this tonight if i find it.

if anyone has any questions just ask. however i cannot comment on cloud service.

Three questions..

Without the cloud service, you can still see a history of recordings by a camera (on its sd card)? Can you do this even from a remote location and not just over local wifi?

I understand with the cheaper/standard subscription only motion clips are uploaded. Can you still set the cameras to record 24/7 to the sd card?

Is there much intelligence to telling it to only record motion. Can it be whittled down to only include people and say not cats? :)

Yes. I can view recordings on the SD card from anywhere in the world. However if you want to record that to your phone make sure you have a strong wi-fi signal and decent upload and download. Which is why i said it's best to be at home to do it. I tried once at home from other side of house and it was okay but not that great. I then tried next to router and it was perfect.

I understand with the cheaper/standard subscription only motion clips are uploaded. Can you still set the cameras to record 24/7 to the sd card?

They will not record 24/7 to SD card they will only record when motion is detected however I believe they record 10 seconds or so before motion started and then 10 seconds or so after motion stopped. I don't know why this wouldn't be sufficient tbh. If there is no motion then you would be recording nothing.

You can set areas and schedules. However it won't be able to distinguish between whatever caused the motion. So you cannot set it up so cats won't set it off unless the cats won't go in certain areas and therefore you could set it up with an area motion detection. However you could then exclude a lot of area by doing so making it not as useful

Hope the above helps. You have to remember this is £18 per camera. Not £200-£300 like NEST.

720P is also more than enough for internal use. 1080p would be overkill. I forgot to add they also have IR so can record at night, etc. Obviously my kitchen is pitch black at night. It still records a really clear picture.

That's great thanks...

This review suggests constant recording is possible - https://www.slashgear.com/yi-home-camera-review-a-great-budget-security-camera-21479177/

What would be ideal is constant recording 24/7 to sdram and motion detections upto the cloud (if you have it).

okay if you click on that link. scroll down to app. then to the settings screenshot. right down the bottom it says activity detection recording. i always use this. i have no idea what happens if i turn this off. it may not record at all or it may record 24/7.

either way i'm not sure why you would want 24/7 like i said motion detection recording is the most efficient way of doing it. unless you think someone can bypass the motion detection using some sort of cloaking.

In an ideal world you'd want 24/7 recording to sdram, and motion footage sent to the cloud.

Thus, something happened yesterday, and for some reason motion didn't capture it. You simply browse through all of yesterday's footage to find it.

This article shows it doing constant recording - (@3:30 for footage) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKOBaf7KSZs

I took the plunge and bought a 1080p Yi camera with a 32gb ad card for about £38, which I thought was a cracking deal. Looking forward to setting up and seeing what it can do, it will mainly be in the bedroom window watching over the drive way.

Thanks for the info Psycho Sonny helps a lot in understanding what it can do.

Look forward to hearing your thoughts...

And if you sign up to their cloud storage can you let me know if it's possible to have the camera recording 24/7 footage to the sd card, while only motion detections are uploaded to the cloud?

a lot of people saying in order to record 24/7 to an sd card. you would want to be buying the much more expensive SD cards which are built for dashcam usage rather than a conventional one as it may work however will deteriorate after several months.

i will be signing up to cloud service this weekend. i also still need to set up all the cameras.

Yep i read the same so bought a class 10 Sandisk high capacity one thats used in dashcams. Think i going to see what the recording capabilities are with just the sd card, then see what cloud recording adds, or doesn't as the case may be.

Thinking of buying a cheap android box or stick so i can install the app on it and view it on my tv. Is everyone using the app on android or iOS? Just i read a few comments saying theres no longer an app for the iPhone.
