Well after about 18 months my 4870x2 finally gave up the ghost, it was in my backup system and i went to turn it on today and no display. Tried one of my 295's and it boots with no bother. :(

Im considering an rma as its still under warranty (i think) but the problem is that its a powercolor card  and from what ive read theyre complete gits to deal with. My other problem is the receipt is MIA and i can't remember where i bought it from. Sent powercolor a message on their site but from all ive read ive about a snowballs chance in hell of getting a replacement.

Just wondering if the cooking method is worth a try. Really can't figure out why its giving no display, no led's are lit up showing an error, they just flash on boot as they always did for a split second. Tried in in another slot and same thing happens, the fan isn't spinning up wildly either :(

Sorry to hear that. :(

I have been wondering about mine actually. I took it apart a long time ago and got rid of loads of dust but ever since then on occasion I get tiny dots either in online games, or when I'm working in desktop. It doesn't seem to last long thankfully or be overly bothersome. Perhaps mine's driver or game related, not graphical corruption.

Anyway, if it's under warranty I'd try your best to do something about the situation. Have you looked throughly for the receipt?

Yeha had a good hoke about and can't find it anywhere. Usually i put it into the box so its easily found but on this instance its not in it =/

Just a thought, if you paid by card (I assume you did), would the bank be able to do a trace on the purchase date, cost etc?

Thats the thing ive looked through my statements and can't find anything relating to it. I cancelled one of my cards since then so its possible it was purchased on that card, but those statements got dumped after it was cancelled.

At the minute im waiting on powercolor responding but from everything ive read about them im half expecting an email with an attachment of a pic of someone flipping me off.

Call the bank. :) There must be something that can help you out. At least if they say "Sorry, no." then you've tried all avenues.

Luckily you have a great video card set-up in your other PC! :)
If mine takes a nose dive then all I have is a 3450, lol. :D

I RMA'd a Powercolor 4870x2 once, I had to ship it somewhere in mainland Europe, netherlands I think. Trying to get a hold of them was a pain, in the end I called their US offices who gave me an email for a contact in Europe. They were slow to respond and the whole RMA process probably took 2+ months in the end till I got a new one back. Although kudos to them it was a brand new sealed one.
If you want the email let me know and I'll see if I can dig it up.

Yeah it would be handy to have that email address, would prefer a direct contact rather than a form on a website. :)

I believe she works in the UK Sales department, I emailed her a copy of my receipt and serial and she initiated the RMA process for me so it's probably worth asking if she can help out if you get nowhere on the website form.

Also just to bear in mind I think it cost me £40 to post the card to the Netherlands by recorded delivery.

Thank's just shot an email and hoping for the best. Even if it can be repaired at a price id be fine with that. :)

My Powercoler 4870x2 was trouble from day one, with overheating problems etc. Ended up putting a 3rd party cooler on it which extended its life a bit; but two of my friends cards have died so I sold it and got a stock 5870.

Gerard - Sorry to hear about your card.

Whats with all these 4870X2's dying. Mine died around March of this year after only 12 months of use.

Can only assume its the heat they generate. The back of these cards seems to get stupidly hot even as the system boots up, i can only imagine the heat thats being hamered onto the ram at the back of the card. Its second only in heat generation to the old x1900xtx i had, that thing routinely hit 96c nomatter how many times i redone the thermal compound, could hit 99-100c if i tried to clock it any.

I'm almost afraid to post this... but my PowercoloUr 4870x2 is still going strong.
Not had any heat issues due to the awesomeness of my Arctic Cooling Accelero Extreme. :)

*touches wood!*
*crosses fingers*

Its suprising that the x2 had 2 full copper gpu heatsinks, and weighed quite a bit more than my single pcb 295 yet they generated a ton more heat. I really feel that card should have had a fan at either end for a push pull setup to try and reduce temps some.

I guess I've been lucky with mine. It still seems to be running nearly as good as it was when I bought it. It hasn't idled at the insane temps some folk reported.
