Lost for words, Adam Johnson current Nottingham Panther and former Pittsburgh Penguin ice hockey player has died after receiving a skate cut to the neck, I was going to go to the Sheffield Arena last night as I've started going to watch the Steelers again after giving up on football but a family do cropped up.

I can't imagine what Petgrave (the players who's skate it was) is feeling and also the crowd as there is a real friendly rivalry in the UK around hockey and I've had a beer with nearly every teams fans over the years.

I couldn't sleep last night because of it, checking my phone constantly for any kind of positive update.

Travelled down from Fife to Nottingham quite a few times for the hockey and it was always an incredibly welcoming team and fanbase.

Must have been incredibly harrowing for the thousands of people in the arena.

Really sad, my 9 year old plays and it makes you think. They do wear mandatory neck guards.
Presume it's some sort of kevlar type thing?

One of those things which only enters discussion after horrible freak accident like this but you'd think such guards would be mandatory in the pros as well if suitable stuff is available.

Yeah there made with kevlar fibres. I certainly wouldn't be surprised now if after this we see them becoming mandatory in the adult leagues too.

I don't think it was intentional at all, he got hit first which threw him massively off balanced.

Irrespective, i got sent the video nor knowing what it was, i would not advise anyone to watch as its harrowing.

A sad loss of life and hopefully they bring in measures to ever prevent this again! Intentional or not, looks it to me but I also don't skate, so don't know how his balance could be affected to cause something like this.

My son mentioned the incident to me earlier, horrific. I just hope there isn't any intent as the video doesn't look good by all accounts.

I've slowed it down and everybody who has seen it says it isn't an accident.
Johnson is standing and the other player does a flying kick into his neck.
I have zero idea how that can be a freak accident.

I've tried to see if there could have been anything at all to cause this. The only thing I've seen is as the white jersey goes in front of the red jersey, for a split second you see he seems to have made contact with the white jerseys right boot blades, as they seem to slightly shift. Question, is that enough to cause such a balance loss?
