RIP Gene Hackman

I wonder if they tried to keep the alzheimer's a secret so didn't want people knowing, so his wife looked after him.

Wow :(

After his wife died he was probably just wandering the house by himself with no idea of what was going on. I'm more surprised they didn't have some type of carer system in place to help his wife manage, people with advanced dementia can be challenging to work with to say the least.

No way for anyone to go. :(
This is Trump's america where healthcare is being slashed

He retired in 2004 due to his heart not being in great shape. Though he was a cyclist into his 90's, he had an accident with a pickup in 2012,wouldn't surprise me if that was the start of Alzheimer's kicking off.

With an estimated fortune of 80 million dollars, I think he could afford medical bills.
With healthcare being slashed, that might mean care is not available, no matter how much money you have.
Also, estimated worth is exactly that - Estimated, based on what little they do know of someone's private financial affairs. I doubt anyone publishing that sort of data will have much of a real insight, unless they hack into peoples' private bank accounts or something.

With his wife being in her early 60s, I doubt anyone particularly concerned about her ability to care for him. Hantavirus starts off being like flu, followed by a high chance of sudden heart failure. She probably thought she just had flu and didn't realise the danger she was in and thus that put him in.

This is why people are usually asked not to speculate as guess what, facts are important. He was a great actor and I’ll have to have a rewatch of my favourite Gene Hackman films.

I’m just glad Hitler wasn’t involved as first speculated ;)

Gene's wife Betsy Arakawa did not died on 11 February 2025 as cops claimed. Betsy was actually alive on that day, her cell phone records showed she was alive on 12 February 2025 made 3 calls to Cloudberry Health Medical Center in Santa Fe to arranged appointment on 12 February 2025 to see a doctor about something with her health or Gene. It had 1 missed call from Cloudberry Health Medical Center probably doctor concerned about her or Gene not arrived on time missed appointment.

It seemed Betsy died 24 hours later on 12 February 2025 probably hours before appointment to see a doctor.

"police admit" I do love the sun's style of reporting a minor correction based on what was likely an estimate as if the police were trying to hide something ;)

Time of death is always tricky and a bit of a guess as there are a bunch of variables that the medical examiner/coroner have to guess at to a degree, and some things that could give a more precise time such as if the body was outside (insects etc) don't apply when the body is inside, whilst things like if the heating/cooling is coming on or off or the person died in the bath as the water temperature at the time of death affects some signs.

The fact she appears to have known she was ill but didn't realise how serious it was makes it even sadder, as does the idea that the medical centre doesn't seem to have made more attempts to contact them after a missed appointment, nor raised any alarm.

They did kill the dog though? Obviously not intentionally but still id say it was neglect.
Hmm, I don't know about that is my answer. I mean if they were both dead then they couldn't care for the dog, it would soon die of thirst if not given water. I'm going to think on the positive side (if there is 1 in these circumstances) and assume it was an unfortunate side effect the dog died too (because they were dead and couldn't feed it).

its just a terribly terribly sad story. For an actor held in such high esteem and his "celebrity" self seen as a strong, confident "manly man", it's just an awful way for him to be remembered, and it does highlight that sometimes things are best left unknown and the memory and the person built up thru his body of work and his life can live on.

I saw some heart wrenching speculation that given his advanced dementia, it was not impossible that in the last week he "discovered" his wifes death multiple times over, leaving the room to do something, then forgetting all about it and coming back and finding her dead for the first time again.

I want to remember him as that strong righteous character in Mississippi burning. or that flawed lawman in "unforgiven",

Old people are often very resistant to help, sadly
