Rip Gsync (FastSync?)

V-sync on (or off) in control panel should overrule any in game settings. Combined with G-sync it should cap FPS at refresh limit (v-sync on) or allow higher fps + tearing (v-sync + g-sync disabled)
 
I was always told for G-sync to function you need G-sync = on, V-sync=on (both in NV control panel) and V-sync=off in game :/

When G-SYNC first came out it only worked with V-SYNC ON. There was no option in NVCP to change V-SYNC. They changed this with later driver updates.
 
I would never buy a monitor that forced me into buying a certain brand of card down the line. Thats crazy.

No one is forcing you. I personally use a FreeSync monitor with my Nvidia card (because I don't care about Freesync and just want the great ULMB)

Spot on. Always make sure V-Sync is off in game.

@ Beany - You will miss out on a great tech with that thinking. Freesync screens for AMD and G-Sync screens for NVidia..... Simples!

It doesn't force everybody, but for those who are interested in the variable refresh rate capabilities, it certainly locks them in unless they want to lose one of the main reasons they bought the monitor in the first place.

I'm with beany on this. I'm waiting the whole thing out til there's an adopted standard. I do not like the idea of having to buy just one brand GPU or another.

Frankly, I think Nvidia will have to give in and support Freesync eventually. See, while they are locking in buyers of Gsync monitors to Nvidia GPU's, they are also locking out buyers of Freesync monitors(I imagine most buying these monitors are interested in that functionality). And from what I can tell, there's a lot more Freesync monitors being released than Gsync. Meaning at some point, Nvidia could ultimately be locking out more people than they are locking in. It strikes me as a bad long-term plan to stick strictly with Gsync.

I agree, Freesync is more likely to be supported by both although at the moment G-SYNC is slightly better tech.
Personally I'd love to be able to use G-SYNC/Freesync as well as ULMB/Blur Reduction but its not possible at this time and so is of lesser concern to me

don't think it will be possible to be honest - ULMB relies on a fixed on/off cycle for the backlight... if you started having then a varying match for the screen to display the image you would end up with all sorts of artifacts like the screen appearing brighter or darker depending on how the backlight and screen on time were affected by the varying FPS

basically, you could try it but I would think the end results wouldn't be very pretty
 
Solve me this as linus the ball bag couldn't:

On a 144hz Gsync monitor;

At 144 hz Gysnc on + Vsync on = lowest input lag.
At 45 hz Gsync on + Vsync off = lowest input lag.

Why?

Because Linus is an idiot.
In the video he talks about turning vsync on and off in-game. With gsync you ALWAYS have vsync off in game, you then use control panel to control gsync's vsync behaviour. If he was turning it on/off in game and not doing anything in control panel, we cant be sure what settings he was actually using.

The other thing is that nvidia have updated their drivers as to how gsync's "vsync" behaviour works, so even if he did the testing right (which based on his video he didnt), the results would now be different anyway.

At 45fps vsync would be having no effect, its purely Gsync working (unless he turned on vsync in game which would revert to traditional vsync and gsync wouldnt be operational)

So you should always use gsync with vsync on in NVCP and the ingame vsync settings don't matter because NVCP has priority over ingame?

Andy is spot on and always make sure V-Sync is off in game but on in the NCP (if you want G-Sync to work all the time).

That's why I'm delaying my monitor upgrade as long as possible. I do want a sync monitor but on the one hand I worry that AMD may not compete very well going forward and on the other hand I hate the premium G-sync adds (ie: I'm a bit of a pauper).
 
Thanks for all replies so far. Why would vsync off in game be relevant if the NVCP vsync on overrides this ?

I don't know if it does but the last time I had stuttering, I scratched my head for a bit, checked the game settings and V-Sync was on in game and turning it off fixed it. Not sure if the newer drivers have more control but possibly. probably best just to make sure V-Sync is off in game settings but on in the NCP.

Kind of a conflict of interest, each trying to override each other perhaps?
