I'm my experience, you don't need to state a quantity at all. Ask for "une bière" and you'll get what you want.

True. But some places ask you for a measure. My point was that "pint" is a relatively know measure.

Same in Spain, just ask for a caña* (pronounced 'can-yah') 'small beer', or pinta, 'large beer'. Only tourists buy pints though as they warm up too quickly in the sun.

caña is not a fixed measure though, it could be anything from a cup full, to 2/3rds of a pint, depending on the establishment and the price of the beer.

On a side note, when the bigger glasses for pints go brought in, (1 litre glasses?) it was soo much better, as you still got a pint, but the glass was that little bit bigger, so you wern't spilling it all over the place trying to carry 4 pints back to your table.

Err...time is measured in the decimal system (Base 10) and in smaller units it's also what I think you are getting at i.e. milliseconds. Why are there 24 hours in a day and not 10 - is that what you mean?
