RIP Richard Winters

What must have gone through the mind of Dick Winters and all the other brave allied personel when they heard and read that speech on the eve of the Day of Days. It always brings a tear to my eye thinking about them knowing it could well be their last day on earth but they still did their duty:(

No way. Didn't know this until now. Ah man :(

RIP Major Winters.

I bet even God himself snapped to attention when the major walked into heaven.

Band of Brothers night tonight then!

R.I.P indeed.

Dont want too sound cheesy, but I dont think we should be too sad, should be celebrating his life.

"A long life is not good enough, a good life is long enough."

At 92, I'm pretty sure he had a very long and very good life. Can't think of many who deserve it more.

Watching Band of Brothers now, looks fantastic on Blu-Ray :)

Love that intro so much, one of my favourite parts is when one of Easy Company says he has no idea how Winters made it through the war.

Started watching the series again last night and I still think it's one of the best series ever made, it really captures the atmosphere and the emotions of what those guys went through, at least as well as you can with TV. I'm not sure any of us will ever truly understand what it must have been like.

RIP Dick Winters, and also Shifty Powers who I just realized died in July 2009.

Thought I'd de-lurk for a second or two.

Winters was no doubt an extraordinary man. It is very scary to think that within a few years the horrors of WWII will be out of living memory as the veterans reach the end of their lives.

We will remember them.

The real reason to post here was if you guys liked BoB and the Ambrose book you might like to investigate these:

Probably my favourite Easy Company book, "Wild" Bill Guarnere and Ed "Babe" Heffron met in Europe, Ed was one of the replacements. The two men found they'd grown up just a few blocks away from each other. As you know Bill lost a leg in the Ardennes, but after the war they were re-united and have met or spoken every day since. The book covers their time in Easy Company but also their unending friendship over 7 decades.

Written by Bob Welch, but is based on the memories of Don Malarkey, who was one of the originals.

I haven't got this one yet, but its on the list. Lynn "Buck" Compton was injured but made it back to Easy Company near the end of the war. After the war he turned down an offer to play baseball professionally and became a police detective, later as deputy district attorney of California he prosecuted the guy who murdered Robert Kennedy (JFKs brother).

Another new one, seems to be getting good reviews.

By David Webster, who if you remember was injured and re-joined Easy a little later on. Webster was what we'd call upper class, well educated he wanted to be a writer. He turned down an officers commission because he thought being on the front line with troops would inspire his writing. This book was put together after the war, but not released until his widow did so some years later. By this time Webster had died.. he had an obsession with sharks, went out on his boat one day in '61 and never came back.

I have many war books, so if you want to read about a particular subject let me know and I'll see what I can recommend.

and also Shifty Powers who I just realized died in July 2009.
Heh, was just reading about him and how the rest of the Company fixed the lottery to send one man back to the US early. On the journey to the airfield his car was in an accident seriously injuring him. He spent so long in hospital that most of those he left behind actually made it home before he did.
