RIP Stephen Gately

I suspect more people read her article before complaining than watched the Ross/Brand thing before complaining ;)

Personally half the reason I bothered to read her article was to be offended by it :p ;)

I also think the article was in very bad taste, at the very least, and reading about the funeral today was quite sad.

I don't know any more about Boyzone than the average person, but it did strike me yesterday that it must have been a bit weird for Stephen to join a boyband when mainly their audience would be pre-teen girls? That would take a lot of bravery, unless he didn't know he was gay when he joined and it later dawned on him.

To go to all those concerts, sing "Don't love me for fun girl, let me be the one, girl" night after night and get fan letters from girls who wanted to sleep with him (presumably) must have been very tough.

I guess he figured the fame and money, the opportunity to perform and sing was the major thing and that he could deal with the inner turmoil.

It sure must be tough being a gay person in the pop world if you're not prepared to come out until a later stage. I'll always remember when Will Young was on X-Factor or whatever, he was asked what woman he'd love to take out for dinner and he answered 'The Queen'. Those situations must be so awkward for closet homosexuals in the public eye.

Quality? Just an excuse for a pseudo-intellectual to bash a Daily Mail writer, seized upon rather too eagerly by the look of it.

Both articles 'preaching to the converted' anyway.

Just another pompous bore spending too much time on his Thesaurus writing an article that won't even be remembered come 4pm today. That goes for this Jan woman thing as well. I'm surprised people still buy newspapers. If I wanted to read a blog riddled with pseudo-intellectual babble signifying nothing, I can google one. Saying that, I do think it's nice this writer stuck up for the singer, it's just, who cares.

my personal opinion, tbh I agree abuse on the thesaurus, but in all honesty the daily mails article i found a bit ott and claiming more than what it should, but that's just my opinion :)

In as humanely of a way as possible, I'm very glad to hear that.

Nice to know it was something that wasn't down to his fault or any kind of stupidity on his part.

Am I the the only person who thought "who?"

No. That was also my reaction.

Yeah rest in peace but urm this is like keith ledger, people die and its not the most important thing in the word to the people close to them. My sympathies go to those close to him but to the general public we shouldn't go crazy

Heath Ledger was a famous and highly talented young Australian actor. Stephen Gately was a virtually anonymous member of a defunct, generic, paint-by-numbers, plastic-coated, off-the-peg boy band which had been created by the same conveyer-belt process responsible for other non-entities like E17 and the Spice Girls.

Spice Girls - six consecutive number ones, and 55 million album sales world wide...........

And East 17, well they were not formed on a conveyor belt, or talent show, or one of of the Fuller/Walsh/Cowell axis of evil.

They also sold more albums than Take That before they split.

So, In respect, Gately had nothing in common with either of the groups you mentioned.

I don't care that you don't care. Why bother to read the thread and post that you don't care if you don't really care?

Closet fan?

its a discussion forum, i read discussions and comment in either a positive or negative manner. in this case i presented a negative slant against the popular opinion of this thread.

All this, and still no talent! It's amazing what you can do with technology these days.

And East 17, well they were not formed on a conveyor belt, or talent show, or one of of the Fuller/Walsh/Cowell axis of evil.

I'm not merely referring to talent shows; I'm referring to the modern pop music industry, which fabricates "theme" bands by grabbing a few good looking kids, shoving them into a group, branding them with new personas and electronically enhancing their pitiful wails into something marketable.

Meanwhile, proper bands are still rocking on after 20+ years. Why? Because they actually have talent. They are genuine musicians and singers. Nobody cares that they're not as young as they used to be, because they still produce damn good music. But the kiddy bands... well, they have to be as young as possible, so their shelf life is short, which is why they tend to split early and never regroup.

50 years from now, people will still be singing Bob Dylan songs and marvelling at his genius. They won't be boasting to their grandchildren about the time they nearly got Stephen Gately's autograph.

They also sold more albums than Take That before they split.

And we all know how high Take That sits in the historic lists of musical excellence!

So, In respect, Gately had nothing in common with either of the groups you mentioned.

Nonsense. He was a typical postmodern product, just like the rest of them.

Man Murders Neighbour for Playing Robbie Williams´ "Angels" Non Stop for a Week

Bulgaria: 45-year-old Alexander Alexandrov has been sentenced to 16 years in jail for the murder of his neighbour. His neighbour had played "Angels" by Robbie Williams loudly and without stopping for over a week.

Alexandrov throttled 27-year-old Martin Kromov and attempted to dispose of the corpse. He was apprehended when his vehicle ran out of petrol.

"I was in constant terror of his music. I could no longer think about anything but making him turn it off," said Alexandrov. An appeal is planned.

That reminds me of an ex housemate, Oasis 24/7...

Anyway Robbie williams manufacturered? Yes he was originally but i'd suggest he isn't now. Having said that does he write his own songs?

But still a pile of bottom effluent.

Posh couldn't sing and still can't. Sporty has a voice akin to scratching your nails down a blackboard, Ginger has about as much singing talent as a dead sloth and produced the worst song i have ever heard .... Look At Me, Baby is a Butlin's performer at best and Scary is just that.

They were utter crap but marketed by a very clever man. When they reformed they cut the tour short as they struggled to fill a turd hut.

And East 17, well they were not formed on a conveyor belt, or talent show, or one of of the Fuller/Walsh/Cowell axis of evil.

Wannabe rappers whose music was average at best but again marketed by a very clever man, Tom Watkins.

If I sound bitter because such garbage has made so much money it is probably because I am.

An entirely appropriate response.
