RIP Steve Wright

I used to sneer at DJs like Wright. All that saccharine cheeriness, the silliness. But the older I got, the more he became part of the reliable "fabric" of life. I didn't listen very often, but I felt better for knowing he was there, if that makes sense.

Then I started looking after my Mum as she fell apart with dementia, and Steve became part of our afternoon routine. Comforting. Cheerful. Company when I couldn't get out much. A reliable distraction from the rubbish life threw at us. A reminder life goes on.

Another thread to my entire adult life unravels. RIP Steve, and thanks.

Yep, same as Wogan etc, losing those cheery funnt takes on life voices.

bever understood the celebrity status for playing records.
If that’s all they had to do, anyone could be a good dj. But you also need, personality, charm, wit - among many others to be successful, especially for as long as SW was. Anyone has to realise this even if they don’t particularly like him for some reason. At least display common sense if you’re going to post sillyness.

Anyway….

RIP - doesn’t seem like 30+ years ago (i think!) that I used to listen to him on the radio. Had to Google to check it was the same Steve Wright, couldn’t believe he was 69.
Jesus, where does time go.

I found him a bit marmite and didn't like his style, however, it is a shame he died, so suddenly. I can't say I thought he might have been one of the heavy hitters at Radio 1 back in the day. It's a shame for Radio that he has gone. :(

I went through a phase of listening to radio two from about 2008 for about 5 years or so.

Wogan was still on in the morning, then Ken Bruce, Jeremy Vine then Steve Wright.

Radio 2 was great then. Sadly Wogan passed and Chris Evans stepped in I didn't mind him to be honest.

It's all gone to **** now though, I can't stand whatever her name is in the morning (only have it on my alarm clock) and all the other presenters seem to be gay. Sign of the times :(

Anyway, RIP Steve Wright but RIP Radio 2 as well.

One of the endearing things I liked about Steve Wright, in his early days, was he was one of those people who could not possibly sit still. Whenever you saw footage of him doing his Radio 1 show, or on ToTP he was always shifting about and gyrating etc, and I found that sort of came through when you were just listening on the radio. It was also endearing that he was 50% nose. I also always got him mixed up with Kenny Everett.

The one sidekick character I remember from the bus ride home from school was Mr Fish Filleter, what a bizarre creation.

RIP DJ

Another one of my favourites departed us. :(

Used to enjoy listening to him on the way home. Especially the Serious Jockin' on a friday.

RIP, the ones who bring pleasure to so many always seem to be taken first.

He was one of my favourite DJs in the early 90s, used to listen to Steve Wright in the Afternoon after school.

His style with the 'Posse' and tame gags didn't appeal to me as much in later years (it wasn't offensive like some other jocks) but he'd certainly one of more memorable DJs.
