RIPA Request to Apple by UK

We’re only hearing one side of the story here. Devils advocate, what if these changes meant it was easier to prosecute pedos and terrorists?

By all means, hide your nudes under the floor boards.

This is the balancing act. The problem as Apple well knows is once a back door has been created it effectively makes the encryption worthless.

These changes are all about removing security/privacy from normal people, they won't affect criminals whatsoever because they just won't use iCloud.
It’s really not that bad, think how many data points the government and advertisers have on you already. I doubt little Jimmy in MI5 wants to see your pictures from Lanzarote.

This is why open source cryptography software is so important. GnuPG fixes all these issues and can be used on every major operating system.

Finished deploying and transfering my data to a Synology NAS since I posted this at the start of the thread, just in time it seems.

The UK is turning into a binfire.

I’m not sure what you think you are achieving here. The police would have executed a search warrant on your house already before they execute a warrant on your online storage. For a lot of crimes, they don’t even need a warrant to search your house.

You’ll be forced to handover the encryption key to your local storage or go to prison anyway even if there is nothing pertinent to the crime on it. The same goes for the cloud storage anyway.

They can’t just obtain a speculative warrant to hand Apple, they would need to know you have an Apple account before they were able to obtain it and you would be under investigation for a relevant crime. You’ll have likely been arrested already and the reason they are getting the warrant is because you refuse to unlock the device.

yes but under IPA they would want to monitor the transactions you are making clandestinely without alerting you, which asking for your encryption key would do ?

I'm still intrigued how apple disabling encryption capability will apply to visitors to the UK, and anyone in UK holding a non-UK registered phone (they should be disabling any access to such storage from UK jurisdiction)

What are the chances that there are ministers in government with sensitive information that is now no longer encrypted on Apple servers?

Can't wait for the inevitable scandal.

That’s surveillance, different warrant, different laws and and due to the invasive nature of surveillance and its encroachment on the HRA, a very high bar has to be met. They can’t break the encryption of say messaging without notifying you because they don’t have the key.

You also don’t store ‘transactions’ in iCloud storage’. If you store unencrypted WhatsApp backups detailing your criminal activity in your iCloud storage, you deserve to get caught…

It doesn’t, it only impacts U.K. customers.

What do you think these people are hiding in their iCloud backups? A few ‘selfies’?

The biggest ’scandal’ to come out of iCloud is the celebrity nudes thanks to them leaking their own passwords or using insecure passwords and not having 2FA enabled.

Honestly, it’s this sort of silly comment that makes me cringe.

Well they keep leaving sensitive documents on trains and in bins... is it really so stupid to think they've left something on these servers they shouldn't have?

We're talking people who can't even keep their seething hatred of their voters hushed up because they opt to use whatsapp to do it.

This tired old argument gets trotted out all the time when the government wants to push things in order to elicit an emotional response to overcome any dissenters... "if you got nothing to hide you got nothing to worry about" is another one

Especially when after the attacks it's always that they are known to the police anyway..

Shameful behaviour from Apple for capitulating/cooperating with such a request.

Shameful behavior from our government for having made the request.

So Apple should just say no, what are the UK government going to do bar all Apple devices from UK networks? Yeh good luck with that.
The thing is, I can imagine our government just throwing an absolute ton of money at them and they will be like sureeee.
Same with the upcoming UK TV licence / having Netflix = having to pay tv licence fiasco...if they throw enough (of our tax payers money) at them i can totally see them "complying"

I cant see Apple saying NO out of their heart for customers. Those days for any company seem to be out the window now if money is mentioned.

Terrible take.

They (Apple) never co-operated with the request and they didn’t ‘capitulate’.

The request was to make a back door in the product, they didn’t want to do that.

They have no choice but to pull the product from the market because the government effectively made part of their illegal.

Apple isn’t going ‘win’, the product is literally illegal if they didn’t comply with the request. They had 2 (well actually 4 choices but two of them are completely stupid and effectively a strawman):
A)Make the back door (which they refused to do).
B)Pull the product from the market which 99.9% of users didn’t use anyway.
C) Pull out of the U.K. market entirely.
D) Get prosecuted by the U.K. government for not doing A which ultimately leads to C anyway for continued non-compliance.

Where is the capitulation?

I’ve got no idea what point you are making?

It’s got nothing to do with getting money from the government.

Which has absolutely nothing to do with iCloud.

Government ministers are not allowed to use personal devices to conduct government business.

Government issued devices will not using iCloud for storage and of government work (that would be idiotic and a massive security risk). They’ll be centrally managed with proper security policies in place on them as all ‘work’ phones should be, particularly for use in government.

This isn’t a device that tin pot businesses use, they’ll be a small army of civil servants and specialists from the security services who set this up and manage these devices, that’s if they even use iPhones, other phones are available…
